Microsoft aims for more ‘Natal-like’ evolutions

MGS’ Phil Spencer says the company will look for new ways to modernise the 360

Xbox 360 game developers looking to make use of new technology may not need to wait for Microsoft’s next console.

The platform holder wants to continue to evolve the 360 well after Natal is released, according to Microsoft Game Studios’ head Phil Spencer.

“We effectively reinvented the Xbox once already when we rewrote the dashboard,” Spencer told Develop.

“It’s not about trying to sell consumers a new piece of hardware at the wrong time, it’s about evolving the platform continuously. And we are going to find things, like Natal, that are hardware-related to also do that.”

Spencer added that the 360 has already undergone a major transformation, with the New Xbox Experience replacing the 360’s original ‘blade’ system, as well as the introduction of Mii-like avatars.

“When Natal is added to 360, which is already an online-enabled powerful box, it starts a new generation of entertainment,” he added.

I wonder if his use of the phrase "new generation" has any particular meaning ;)

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Wonder what they have in the pipeline.

I think this is good news. I expect Sony have similar plans (10 year cycle ect) and so at least we will get value from the hardware before having to upgrade. The release of firmware and updates will allow this generation to go on for longer whilst still constantly being reinvigorated. For me personally, it makes it much more likely that for the first time I will buy two systems in one gen (already have a PS3 and am looking at getting a 360) as it looks like they will all be supported for some time to come.

I think this should dispell rumours a new Xbox is coming anytime soon. 2013 at the earliest!

lets see....should they make a portable Xbox ? and make it connect to the 360?
or make more online changes such as a chat room for avatars? , maybe use natal with that?

there is so much Microsoft can do to make stuff fresh.

They also might be referring to some sort of connection that Zune HD will have with the 360. They are supposed to be announcing some Zune news tomorrow(Zune HD release date). 4.0 of the Zune software is releasing tomorrow as well.

yeah i guess the portable Xbox is the Zune, though i don't consider it to be so...until they show it some love themselves.

Next gen XBox rumors yes, but not new gen XBox rumors...

As in a rebranded Natal XBox.
