Forums - Sales Discussion - Sales Battle of the Day (9/13) - Wii Fit vs Wii Play

I've been making the "Change in Sales Game of the Day" threads because my favorite part of this site is the sales data and discussion, so I wanted to do my small part in encouraging that.  But now I've realized that if I keep making new one of those threads every day, I will be out of games to compare soon.  So I'm working on coming up with some other ideas that I can use to make regular threads about. The "Battle of the Day" threads will be less original, as I will just be comparing two games, that are related in some way, and that I think could potentially have similar sales and then discuss which one people think will sell more and why.  So now that I'm done rambling about the point of this thread here are today's two games.

Wii Fit              vs.            Wii Play

Description: Today's competitors have a number of things in common; they are the  two biggest sellers on current gen home consoles, they are both part of the "Wii__" series, and they are both bundled with an accessory/controller. So let's look at the current sales for each game.

Column1 Last Weeks sales Last Month's Average sales Total sales
Wii Fit 111,146 108,368 21,826,461
Wii Play 42,144 44476.5 24,116,355
Difference 69,002 63,891 -2,289,894

So you can see that Wii Play has a little over 2 million lead over Wii Fit, but Wii Fit is selling more weekly than Wii Play.

Column Based on Last Week's sales Based on last month's average weekly sales
# of weeks until Wii Fit outsells Wii Play 33.19 35.84

So based on that information it might seem inevitable that Wii Fit will catch up with Wii Play, but there are a number of important factors to consider, the biggest of which is the upcoming release of Wii Fit Plus which will surely slow the sales of Wii Fit. Also Wii Play's sales seem to be more dependent on the number of Wiis sold, so sales should increase greatly going into the holiday season when console sales increase dramatically.  So what do you think? Will Wii Fit ever outsell Wii Play?  Vote in the poll and then let us know what you voted for and your reasoning behind your choice.

I think Wii Play because it will be bundled with the controller forever.

Wii Play. Wii Fit + is likely to somewhat undermine further Wii Fit sales, no Wii Play + has yet been announced.

Well, a little breakdown.

Wii Play is linked to the Wii's sales. Wii is down 25% YoY, Wii Play is down 33%. Essentially, Wii Play will keep selling 25-33% of the Wii's sales till the end of the gen. That's the most likely scenario.

As a result, we get the question:

How much will the Wii sell? Wii Play is likely to sell 25-33% of the Wii.

The Wii is now at 53M, and Wii Play at 24M.

If the Wii ends at 100M, that will be 36M-39M
If the Wii ends at 120M, that will be 40M-45M
If the Wii ends at 140M, that will be 45M-53M
If the Wii ends at 160M, that will be 51M-59M

Now, how much is Wii Fit likely to sell?
It's currently at 21M.

Edit: The rest of my post... dissapeared?

@Pineapple, nice post, well thought out about Wii Play's sales. Sorry that the second part of your post got cut off.

It's interesting that all three comments have said Wii Play will sell the most, but in the poll Wii Fit is winning 8-2.

Wii Fit will be somewhat redundant once Wii Fit+ is out, if you counted WF+ with Wii Fit, it would way outsell Wii Play, but otherwise no.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

WIi Play

unless this site counts Wii Fit Plus differently from Wii Fot

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Wii Fit is still winning the poll, despite all the comments being in support of Wii Play.

Obviously the key factor here is what your sales expectations for Wii Fit is after the release of Wii Fit Plus. I don't think they've announced anything yet, but do you expect a price drop on Wii Fit after the release of Wii Fit +. I guess that's the reason Wii Fit+ and balance board bundle is $10 more than Wii Fit and the balance board, to encourage new owners to buy Wii Fit and the balance board and then later upgrade with the $20 standalone version of Wii Fit +.

Wii Fit is still winning the poll but still none of the comments have been in support of Wii Fit beating Wii Play. Does anybody have an explanation for why they think Wii Fit (not including Wii Fit Plus) will beat out Wii Play in total sales?

Wii Play will sell more (and possibly, will have outsold PS3 or xbox 360 when all is said and done).

Wii Fit plus will probably put an end to Wii Fit.
