Forums - Sales - 550K in context

It's funny, but I swear people were raving about $200 being the mass market price only 1-2 years ago. I didn't realise people spent more money in a recession.

Since the PS3 dropped below it?

If this one fizzles out then the official mass market price will be $200, just wait until the PS3 drops below that!

Since the ps1 and ps2 sold very well at $300 and the wii sells very well at $250 you would have to agree that the mass market price falls within that range.

^There is no specific "mass market price"

People buy things in the knowledge of what price they are, if they don't believe the current RRP is justifiable they won't buy it... simple as that.

People buy things when perceived value is higher than the price. Simple as that.

I dont understand.

You cant compare other > 500k weeks because none of them were caused outside of the holiday period by a price drop and redesign.

So comparing the drop offs of sales without taking into account WHY the sales spiked is not analysis its trying to grasp at straws.

The variables are all different as to why the consoles outside of the holidays sold that much thus the comparative drops wont be similar.

It could be a 70% drop it could be a 20% drop.

"Mass market price" has never been at 300. Don't know where that guy got it from. The reason people started throwing this around was because a Sony guy said 75% of Ps2 sold were at the 200 price point or lower...

Which for gaming consoles at this point in a generation has been around the $250 - $300 price range. At least for the last 3 generations anyways.

Regardless, the point is the price. You're obviously going to appeal to a much broader audience with a $299 price point as opposed to $399, $499 or $599. The 360 has had a sku at that price since launch the wii has been $250 since launch. The ps3 just arrived there. I think the ps3 getting 5 big weeks like that considering the price compared to the competition is quite impressive.

^ What are you talking about? We all know you pulled that number out of the air.

That post really did put it in context. Im expecting a 55% drop off.
