Forums - Sony - Sony’s Facial Recognition Software via PlayStation Eye

very cool, but I know some douche bag will criticise it regardless.

My first prediction...kind of.

Sony will release the PS Eye 2. It will have an on board processor and obviously still be capable of using current PS Eye software.

All this stuff they are doing now is just the build up to it.

Sony will negate natal as being a "x360 only" way of playing games.

Nope.  Not going to happen, bub.  They spend all this money and time making prototypes for the current PSEye tech that many people have, why would they change it, release a new PSEye and abandon the small user base they already have built up for the PS Eye?

Also, this isn't facial recognition, it's head tracking.  It also needs a lot of work because the glitches with the eyes, ears, and sometimes the placement was a bit off.

Cool, but nothing really shocking. Their are video's of the PS2 Eyetoy doing facial recognition.

Did you have anything good to say in this thread?

Or is it the usual "Natal > PSeye" shit?

Leave... please.

No. Read further...

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

A serious question, what does Natal offer that the PS Eye doesn't? I know Sony is foucssing on using their wand in conjuction with the Eye but based on the Eye Pet demo it would appear that the PS Eye is also capable of tracking body movements (and now we have facial and voice regonition too).

If you like playing with the lights dimmed down low for atmosphere then you'll be needing a 360 and Natal. Other than that, I'm not sure. Different technologies practically the same outcome.

PSEye uses pixel color changes and edge detection to determine movement and distance.  Calculations are done by the PS3.

Natal uses infrared to determine the exact distance of objects and creates a skeletal system comprising of 48 different points.  Calculations are done via an onboard chip on Natal.

I believe PSEYE uses infrared as well. Watch this presentation by Dr Rick (Playstation head of R&D)

This is from 2003 where he is talking about what new stuff tehy have been working on. He talks about a new camera that uses IR from an Israeli company.

The PS Eye does not use any form of Infrared technology.  Just a simple camera capturing 60fps and 640x480 resolution.

That new camera from Israel is part of the technology behind Natal.  MS bought that company.

its a 120fps 2mpx CMOS Sensor (something sony its AWESOME AT) webcam ;).

with 4array mic and nice low light tech.

The PlayStation Eye is capable of capturing standard video with frame rates of 60 hertz at a 640x480 pixel resolution, and 120 hertz at 320x240 pixels, which is "four times the resolution" and "two times the frame-rate" of the EyeToy, according to Sony.

So no, it is not a 120fps 2megapixel camera.  The 4 array mic is true, but last I checked 640x480 is equivalent to far less than 1,300,000 pixels, but are commonly taken in 1.3 megapixel image quality.  Most cell phones these days have better cameras in them to be honest.

Thanks for the detailed response, that clears up the tech quite a bit. I'm not a huge fan of motion control unless it can be well incorporated in the games I like to play but it will be interesting to see what direction each piece of hardware takes their respective console. From what you say it seems that the PSEye has similar features to Natal but lacks the accuracy needed to enable it to be incorporated into games using anything other than simple gestures (as seen on Eye Toy) without using the Wand. The accuracy of the Wand does give me some hope that maybe it can be used in more 'core' games. The possible implications for its use in RTS games could be quite exciting.

Yeah, the Sony Wand tech looks pretty darn good.  Sword and shield games just scream to be made.

I agree but I have serious doubts how well the game itself can handle 1:1 interaction.
