Top Myths About the PS3 and its Owners

In the close to three years since the PS3 has launched, there have been numerous myths floating around about the system and its owners. Most of these myths have been perpetrated and spread around by fans of other systems or fans of the PS3, but not all. Even the mainstream media and industry analysts have been guilty of broadcasting these myths. Well I am here to close the door on these delusions once and for all.

Myth: The PS3 is doomed

It has been an exellent couple of weeks for the PS3, with the launch of the Slim and the price drop. But none of that changed the fact that the PS3 was NEVER doomed. Many fanboys argued that the system would go the way of the Dreamcast, and Sony was just a bunch of idiots. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Now it is no secret that Sony is in trouble financially, but so are a lot of businesses nowadays. I have always believed Sony would ride out the storm, drop the price on the PS3 and soon become the number two selling system. That does not mean that the Playstation brand did not take a hit this generation, and Microsoft did make significant gains. However there is room for two, and Playstation will continue to be around for a long time.

Myth: The PS3 is going to crush everyone

As soon as the PS3 Slim was said to have sold 500,000 units in one week, the Sony Fanboys started this myth. The PS3 still has around ten million units to go to catch the 360 and thrity million units to catch the Wii. It is entriely resonable that Sony will catch Microsoft, at least within the next year. However the PS3 will NEVER catch up to the Wii. Or by the time that the PS3 does catch it, both Microsoft and Nintendo will be several years into the next generation. At that point Sony will be too. This is good news for those that believe in the ten year life span of the PS3, but it does not mean that the console will have crushed everyone.

Myth: Xbox Live is better then PSN

Those of us that follow the gaming industry should come up with some sort of dating system, similar to a.d. and b.c. Only in this case it would be b.s. and a.s. (Before Slim, After Slim) The price drop has certainly made the PS3 a much more value oriented system. What does this have to do with PSN? Well it is FREE. Sure the PSN still does not have cross game chat or a party system, but the fact is they wanted it in the 3.0 update. The rumor is Electronic Arts could not make it work, so they killed it. What does this mean? Well the PSN will be getting those features in a matter of months. At that point what are you paying your $50 per year on Xbox Live? Netflix, Twitter and Facebook. All applications that are available for free on the PC. Seems a little over priced suddenly.

Myth: People buy the PS3 only for Blu-Ray

While yes, even I know a couple of people who have purchased PS3s only for Blu-Ray, why is this negative? At the lower price point, Sony is going to move a ton more systems. (Even if they are basically stand alone Blu-Ray players.) But these purchasers might also be tempted or interested in a game or two throughout their ownership of the console. Besides how is this any different then the people who have purchased 360s for the access to Netflix on their TV?

Myth: PS3 owners have small penises

You might be thinking I just put this category in to be funny. Well you are only half right. There is a popular blog post floating around the internets stating this fact. (Read it here) It boils down to the PS3 fanbase getting defensive about everything, strictly because they all have small junk. No, they were getting defensive because the Sony fans were not used to losing. Now with the perception that Sony is again going to be on top, the swagger has returned. But I just want to say I have a huge penis, and I am a PS3 owner. My wife, no penis.

Myth: The PS3 has no games

That is Vampire Rain... Not really a game.

This myth has been plaguing the system since launch day. It is true that most consoles do not launch with the best lineup, and Sony maybe had a weak lineup one year into the systems life. But they also got MOST of the great third party titles, and have been working like mad to bring out the highest quality exclusives. After completing the Top Ten MUST Buy Games of the Fall list, Sony is clearly leading in the best games category right now. But hey Microsoft guys, at least you still have Halo: ODST, right?

Myth: The PS3 has ALL the games

On the flip side the 360 and Wii still do have a ton of quality exclusive games, and just because you may not like them does not mean a ton of other people don’t. Take Halo for example. I am not a huge fan, but I certainly appreciate the series and had a decent enough time with 3. Big Fable 2 fan and Left 4 Dead fan also. Plus Natal looks really intriguing. Then you have anything Mario, fuggedaboutit right?

Some Sony fans will claim that the 360 exclusives are not exclusives and can be played on the PC. Well those titles are still exclusive from the PS3, so there are still plenty of reasons to purchase a 360 or Wii. Now everyone hold hands, and sing some songs together. Can’t we all just get along?

Let me start by saying anyone who qoutes the opening poster word for word needs to be slapped.

Anyway, I really don't care about the 360 anymore.  I've got two of them.  Both got red ring of death around the same time.  However, the 1st one just needed to be sent to microsoft.. The other 360... freaggin'... CURED ITSELF of RRoD.  Neither has done it since.  But, I'm puzzled as to how the 2nd one managed to just decide not to have RRoD anymore.

My second problem with the 360 is how it scratches discs.  If that happens, and I cant get it fixed for under 5 bucks, or replaced, hey, I just wasted 60 bucks, because I'm not buying another copy of the game.

3rd problem is paying for xbox live... I just used my brothers live account, no sense in us BOTH paying for it, right?

4th problem.  You can't re-order the controllers after they're turned on.  So, what you have to do is turn them on in the order you want.  PS3, however, allows you to change them 1-7, btw, we need more 5p+ PS3 games...

The last, and smallest problem I have with the 360 is the directional pad.  It's complete crap when playing fighters.  I love my fighting games.  More so than shooters.  I don't even have a shooter... closest thing to a FPS I have is MGS4.  But, when trying to pull of moves, in say, BlazBlue for example.  I screwed up my combos 80% of the time, and couldn't move the way I wanted.  So much accidental jumping..  It's like fighters aren't playable with a standard 360 controller.

When I play on PS3, I don't worry about accidental jumping, or screwing up my combos.  I use a standard, out-of-the-box Dual Shock 3 controller, and, in Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, I doubt I'd ever be able to do cHK+Sublimation+ tour de magie + HP + super schwarzaile with a 360 controller.  Ruby Heart's awesome... and so is Jin.

I don't think anyone believes the myths, but, people say PSN lags.  I really haven't personally noticed 360, or PSN lagging too much.  But, I have noticed lag from BOTH of them.  But, to me, the experience is mostly lag free.  I hardly ever lag in MvC2 online, and maybe had to quit no more than 5 battles online, but, that was due to the other player(s) being too far away... But, with BlazBlue, I've played people in Japan with no lag on PSN, beat them down, and they sent me friend requests, lol.  And, when we play, we still don't lag.

I read the Xbox 360 list first because it was higher than the PS3 list.

I think this guy is full of himself, this isn't worth reading its just the same crap rehashed but in a way for him to incite convroversy.

Myth: I should give a crap about myths about the PS3.

Answer: False!

I found this lame.

IMO this kind of BS is a waste of our time.

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.
