Forums - General - Most Outrageous Malaprops

  • Main Entry: mal·a·prop·ism
  • Pronunciation: \ˈma-lə-ˌprä-ˌpi-zəm\
  • Function: noun
  • Etymology: Mrs. Malaprop, character noted for her misuse of words in R. B. Sheridan's comedy The Rivals (1775)
  • Date: 1849

1 : the usually unintentionally humorous misuse or distortion of a word or phrase; especially : the use of a word sounding somewhat like the one intended but ludicrously wrong in the context
2 : malaprop

(A malaprop is an instance of malapropism.)

I want to hear the craziest malaprops you have personally witnessed.

My entry comes, surprisingly, from a D&D-style game.  (It's surprising because I've played about 2 in my life.)

One of the characters meant to say (as he later explained) that he was going to "despoil" a body -- meaning about the same thing as "loot".  What he actually said was "defile" -- which means something, uh, worse.  And the GM refused to let him restate his intentions!  Thus, the next scene went something like, "As you're pulling up your pants, someone enters the room."

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

I don't think I've heard anything as good as that one. But I once heard someone say "decreppled" like they accidentally said "decrepit" and "crippled" at the same time. But then they said it a few more times so they actually thought it was a word.

Did I really intimidate everyone with the awesomeness of my OP example, or are people just afraid to click into a topic with a title with a word they don't understand?

This doesn't really count, but it was a typo.
I was trying to type "Sonic Heroes" on the computer, but my pinky finger went too far, and I mistyped it as "Sonic Herpes" ... :/

I was intimidated by the awesomeness of your example, but I felt the need to post to keep this thread alive.

But I just remembered a better one, that's actually a malaprop.

Some guys I knew were trying to get out of the city and they said they wanted to get some woods, some river, and some beach all in one trip. They skipped town for the weekend and when they came back, I was like "So, did you guys get some river, some beach, and some wood?" and then we all froze and realized what I just said.

I've had a few... but honestly can't remember them now. Sorry.

Oh, it totally counts IMO -- that's an Internet malaprop.  You did that in the thread title, right?  I remember it well.

I don't remember how this one went, but someone I was talking to tried to say "organism" but ended up saying "orgasm".
