| selnor said: Surely Sony are aware that many people are already playing 3d gaming with their 360 and this week with PS3 via the downloadable game. Ibelieve it arrives on PSN this week. And Live Arcade has had it since 26 August. http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1753/Invincible-Tiger-The-Legend-of-Han-Tao/p1/ Also there is no need for a new TV at all. Many games for PS3 and 360 this year will be fully in 3d at retail level to. G Force game based on the 3d film is in 3d. As is the game of Avatar this year. This is not new for next year. And I'm a bit flabbergasted that noone on this site knows there is likely 6 games by the end of the year in 3d with glasses. Again no need for a new TV. |
Surely you are aware that many people already played 3D gaming with their PS2 in 2005 via the Sony-published game Sly 3?
I believe the significance of the technology mentioned here is that it can play any game in 3D. Hence the Wipeout demo.
I'm also flabbergasted that anybody could be flabbergasted that most gamers aren't following the development of crappy movie tie-ins like G-Force or Avatar! Wake me when we actually get some decent games in 3D.
So i will have to buy a new PS3 or TV to enjoy 3D gaming? Or will it rather be a firmware update?
So the advance here is that rather than movie studios or game developers having to publish their material in 3D the hardware (be it TV or built into the PS3 / Blu-ray player or digital movie projector) will do it with any digital media? This is a real advance because it doesn't require publishers to do anything new, spend more to produce for the new technology or squeeze more data onto discs. I guess it's a technology company's dream: producing entertainment technology that doesn't require producers to be the middle man between the technology and the consumer, so market directly to the consumer and bypass the producers.
Quite a bit different to the few games produced in 3D that Selnor mentioned.
Pretty much any FPS will look amazing converted to 3D if the technology does it well. It will add a new dimension to driving games too.
This with the PSwand packs a pretty big punch. But what will be the cost of 2xglasses+PSeye+2xPSwand? which will pretty much be the minimum purchase to make reasonable use of these technologies.

Ok. Lets stop the misconceptions here.
1. There is no Firmware update to magically transform your existing games.
2. The technology needed on the TV side of things releases next year. Sony start with the Bravia towards December.
3. The PS3's capable of producing the signal needs EXTRA hardware. Which Sony predict will arrive in PS3's 2011.
4. Any Ps3 any of us own right now, will NOT play in 3d unless it uses the conventional method already existing in games on Live Arcade and PSN.

"And when might this technology find its way into the PS3 hardware? Sony says this will all start in 2011 and if that happens, we'll all suddenly be in a quasi-virtual reality that we've never experienced before. Think the industry is moving at a rapid clip?"
So if you want this new method of tech you have to buy a new TV ( expected around £3000 ) and the new PS3 in 2011. Sucks cos I just bought a Slim for Christmas. M$ were looking at this tech to for last few years, but they look to be deciding that for next gen.

I think you should reread the OP :P
It clearly says glasses are required, the caption under the picture just means that without glasses you see that blurry mess which the picture shows.

PLEASE, JUST TO MAKE CLEAR:
There are TWO types of 3D TV´s + PS# solutions:
1)Aditional glasses that do the interchange/imageflipping very fast and normaly this is the cheapest one, due to any user just buy the Glasses and can still use the current TV and PS3...
2)The TV has a layer that supports 3D, so, there´s no need for glasses and the technology is a way diferent from the glasses technology, so, it´s not possible to program something to work "out of the box" for both technologies.
SONY will deliver BOTH technologies, BUT for different audiences...
HOME Entertainment will be feeded by 3D glasses... and 3D TV´s will be for merchandise and market usage, ´cause it´s resolution isn´t sooo nice and stays cool in big screens and in long distance, a lot more distance is needed..
Do a research at the Network, you will find "PHILIPS 3D TV" and "3D Glasses".
Tears and now go to school!
