Clean up the NES and grab some more games. Best console ever by a large margin, hundreds of good games, and most of them are cheap. SNES is also an excellent system for anyone, although the games are more expensive than NES and there are fewer good ones (but still a lot).

I think you have the quality bar on games backwards there.  The NES had A LOT of terrible *terrible* games.  It had a lot of classic good ones, but there were some of the shittiest games ever made on the NES.

No, I had it right the first time, and I speak from experience, having played the vast majority of the NES library.  I haven't played quite as many SNES games but it's quite clear really.  Check my collection if you doubt.

If you could, can you please name some "must play" titles for the NES?

Sure.  I'll just throw out a few of my very favorites off the top of my head since that will be easier for me.

Castlevania I-III

Contra & Super C

Super Mario Bros. 1-3

The Battle of Olympus

Dr. Mario

DuckTales (I-II)

Ninja Gaiden I-III (but the first is the best)

StarTropics & Zoda's Revenge

Tetris (try the Tengen version)

The Legend of Zelda

Batman

Blaster Master

Journey to Silius

RC Pro Am I-II

Wizards & Warriors

Marble Madness

Mega Man 1-6 (2 is the best, then 3, then 1)

Rescue Rangers (I-II)

Mendel Palace

Crystalis

Double Dragon (I-III, but I like III best...most like II best)

Kid Icarus

Gargoyle's Quest II

Little Nemo the Dream Master

Maniac Mansion

Gremlins 2

North & South

Shadow of the Ninja

Shatterhand

S.C.A.T.

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

To be honest, there are just tons and tons more, and these are all either excellent or all-time classics.

If you already have a NES you should try and fix it.
Any games machine is worth buying, SNES and DC more so, but that has to do with you becoming a collector.
If you just want to play some good games of yesteryear you should look into the Wii Virtual Console and/or some of the games that were re-released for the GBA and DS.
