It just crossed my mind that this year I have as of yet to buy, rent or play any new retail 360 games this year. Not one. Now I'm going to go ahead and say that my main console is the ps3 and as such that is the system that I get 99.9% of my multiplats for, which has a lot to do with this delimma. So I am strictly talking exclusives here. This is actually the longest I've gone without buying a game for my 360 though. And I'm not saying I haven't played my 360 this year. The exact opposite, I still play many of the games that I bought last year when I get a moment away from my ps3. I absolutely love gears 2 and that gets most of my 360 playtime as of now, but that's just it. I have add when it comes to games, I always have to be playing new titles, it's hard for me to go back and replay even the games that I love. I'm always looking for something new and the 360 just has not given me anything that fits my interest this year, and the worst part is it doesn't look like that fact is going to change in 09. So far this year we've seen a lot of mediocre and poor exclusives such as velvet assassin, ninja blade, etc. and it looks like section 8 is mediocre also going by recent reviews. There have been some that have gotten decent but not great reviews. The only two that come to mind however are halo wars and star ocean. As for Halo Wars, I'm not a big RTS fan, exspecially on consoles, the demo didn't impress me and I still thought it had bad controls when compared to any pc title, and I generally believe the halo universe is uninteresting. Star Ocean looked very unimpressive also. The gameplay looked great by rpg standards, but that's not saying much as the story just didn't interest me.
Now, as for the horizon and whats to come, a few titles in 09 are going to be great games, but they won't get my purchase. As for ODST, Halo 3 was my first halo. I was so hyped after hearing so much about the game, but never having axcess to an xbox I never got to experiance the first 2. I preordered and bought the legendary edition (thinking I could at least wear the damn helmet >_<) and when I finally got the game I was so disappointed. Really, it was a good game imo but it seemed so mediocre due to the hype I had built up for it. The campaign was among the most dull, boring, and mediocre campaigns I have experianced in any shooter, any that I had ever expected to be good anyway. The online however, was of course great and a redeeming feature, but neither was it my favorite online fps experiance and to boot, COD4 came out directly afterwards which has to be my favorite fps online. Because of that, I just can't see myself buying ODST although it will certainly get a rent and I'm looking forward to givng the halo universe another try. And this time it has an edge, I'm not expecting much. Who knows, maybe I will buy reach next year depending on my experiance. In addition, Left 4 Dead 2 looks great but after buying, and enjoying, the original, I won't be buying the sequal. And no, it's not because of any boycott, that is retarded. It's because frankly, as fun as the first one was, I could never shake the feeling that I didn't get my money's worth. There just wasn't enough material on the disc to warrant the $60. Without any true single player campaign, it felt like one of those online only games that give you a great experiance at half the cost such as warhawk, socom: confrontation, etc. only this one was full retail. I won't be buying mag either if it's $60. I'm not paying full price for one aspect of a game. I felt left 4 dead was even worse because I completed it in a little over 4 hours and after that it's really just the same thing over and over with a vs. mode that I didn't care for. At least with games like mag the experiance is so different every time. Now, I did play the levels over and over, but I did and still feel like it was just as much a rip off as heavenly sword at $60 or any other of those 6 hour games that you can play over and over but the material just isn't there to warrant the price. Now again, I will be renting and enjoying L4D2 just as much as I did the original, but again I was burned once already. Other then that the only exclusive I can think of is forza 3, and I just don't really enjoy racers. Not even gt5 is high on my list. The only reason why I'll pick up that title is because my gf loves gt.
Now all of this being said, in just the begining of next year, barring any really low metacritic averages, I'll be buying Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2, and Splinter Cell: Conviction and I can't tell you how hyped I am for these three titles. They are going to be huge, and it looks like the rest of 2010 will be just as amazing. And here is my question to my fellow 360 owners. The question isn't if there are good 360 exclusives in 09. There are some really good games comign out even though I think the first 8 months were really poor besides some good dlc. It's simply this. Do you think, compared to the past, that 09 has been the worst year for 360 exclusives? I unfortunately do because of my tastes and I was just wondering if I was alone. I really just want a brand new game in my 360 already. :(
