Forums - Sony - Why Sony dropped the BC ???

I read this in an article on brittish gaming site CVG (computerandvideogames.com)

"Sony itself couldn't disclose exactly why the BC was dropped, but CVG has been told that it relates to saving on the licensing costs for the necessary emulation software."

If true, this would mean that dropping the BC was actually a cost-saving measure.

Who on earth would they be licensing the software from?  Isn't the EE+GS entirely Sony intellectual property?

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

Feh...

I can just see what comes next.

"We at Sony now feel that playing PS3 games is a 'luxury' feature and will be charging more for it as is appropriate."

EE was co-developed with Toshiba. So maybe them?

People wanted a cheeper PS3 and they got it, so STFu if you don't get the same features as my more expensive model, you want them PAY FOR THEM. I did so why shouldn't you.

This has to be one of the lamest quotes I have seen on this site. SMH. Some folks don't see the value in paying $500 for a machine that's not worth it. Maybe one day, but folks aren't being cheap. Just because you foolishly wasted your money right now doesn't mean we have to. Until the PS3 shows me a clear cut advantage over the 360 with killer exclusives, a lower price point WITH BC, forget it ...

What make me the more intellgent poster i post my reasoning behind it, you dont you just bitch. I payed 500 and i have BC if there was a $400 PS3 when i bought my PS3 i would have decided is the 100 off worth the functin the console loses. If it is i buy the $500 console, if the function is not woth it i buy the $400 version..

If one is $500, other is $400.

What makes you special enough to have everything the $500 offers for only $400 ?

The fact that we are potential customers makes us special enough. Sony wants me to buy their console, but I have no special attachment to giving them my money. I'd like to have a chance to play some of the PS3 exclusive games if the PS3 became cheap enough. If they are just going to continue to strip the system down though, while reducing the cost by still not enough ($300 is pretty much my limit) then I will be upset and complain. At this rate the features I really like will not be available at all (potentially) by the time they reduce the price enough for me to get one.

And yes, BC is a big deal for me. I have some PS2 games I love to play, and they have no sequel announced for them on the PS3. I hate having to swap cables around and then hunt down the proper controller and hook everything up just to play a game. I prefer having it set-up and ready to go. Take that away from the system and it becomes worth even less to me.

It might not be software, it might be the actual hardware design itself. Literally zillions of companies cooperate to make electronic parts, Sony may own the overall design but small companies will own particular pieces.

ISupply estimated the PS2 emulator chips cost $27 in 2006, so leaving that out is a serious savings. Remember, electronics prices drop very fast, then slower and slower, so that $27 might be down to $20 today, assuming 30% in annual cost reductions.
