Forums - Sony - Why Sony dropped the BC ???

They are having some sort of plan.. with the 40gb they want people to buy the ps2.

Great article. I don't know if he's right about the cost of the chips, but that's a minor detail. This part was absolutely spot on:

This does not, however, account for Sony's uncanny recent ability to deliver an entire storm system's worth of clouds for every silver lining they dish out. Two pieces of information have left a seriously bad taste in the mouths of media and consumers alike in the wake of this announcement.

Firstly, there is the utterly peculiar announcement that the 60GB model is being discontinued in Europe - with no new stock to be brought in once existing stock is depleted. It's not as bad as it sounds; Sony claims that the existing stock will last through until Christmas. However, that fact in itself leaves us wondering why on Earth the company decided to share this information.

If the 60GB model is to be discontinued with no replacement, this is one of the most bizarre and, frankly, dumb decisions we can imagine. Unless Sony actively wishes to discourage core gamers from investing in its product, we simply can't envisage any reason to take the high-end option off the market - and therefore we have to assume that the 60GB model will be discontinued so that it can be replaced, perhaps with an 80GB (becoming standard in other territories) or even 120GB model.

In which case, why tell people months in advance that the model is being discontinued? Why not wait until after Christmas, announce the new model, and enjoy a January sales spike when the new version hits the shops? The simple, and sadly rather cynical, answer is that Sony want people to be fooled into thinking that this is their last chance to pick up a "proper" PS3, to help drive sales ahead of Christmas.

We don't have a problem with companies talking up their products. However, anyone who's been following Sony's trials and tribulations in the last year could have told them that playing tricks and word games on their consumers is pretty much the last thing that a company with a reputation for breaking its promises needs right now.

Well, that's just another splendid example of how Sony's functioning now....or rather not. Just don't really understand why people diss the author, when he didn't go into any sales figures. All he did was write down cold, solid facts....and maybe two or three assumptions.

Oh yeah, saying "want BC? pay more, if u no have money then work ya bum" is one of the most idiotic statements that could've been spouted. So yeah, Hus is being his usual self. But please, forcing people to buy the more expensive version to just get BC. That's really saying a lot about Sony right now. That is dissing customers right there.

Any claim that this has been done for cost purposes is clearly false, because the European PS3 already emulated its predecessors in software. Some legacy chips remained on-board (but not the central processor, the Emotion Engine), but their cost is unlikely to have been much more than a dollar or two per unit - if even that.

==> feel free to comment.

LOL, a good waver chip costs you $10'000 and is probably good for 350-500 "some legacy" chips (depending on structure size). Talk about not saving... I wish these "experts" would actually at least try to understand a little bit about what they are foaming about.. wishful thinking, I know.. these idiots seem to grow on trees nowadays.

You apparently don't have any clue what you are talking about, either. A 12" wafer can easily hold a crapload of legacy die.....

My numbers are certainly outdated and based on numbers actually known (old pentiums and yield numbers). I very much doubt that the GS has any fault tolerancy built in and is produced on top knotch die processors (the chips in the US pictures of a PS3 board look like old fashioned large die EE/GS PS2 chips). And contrary of what you might think about clues, I do have some so let's leave it at that. Even if we get over 1000 dies out of a waver, that's still over $10 savings per PS3.

Ok, maybe "clueless" was a bit harsh... BUT, I actually work in the semiconductor industry and I am quite certain that they are getting way more than 1000 die per 12" wafer...  That said, even if it WAS $10/unit in quantity that adds up, but it is a feature that a lot of people want and I don't think it was in Sony's best interest to remove a $10 chip to reach their price point.  As I mentioned above, the Broadway in the Wii is easily more powerful than the Playstion equivalent and is 19 square millimeters...  That is a LOT of die on a 12" wafer...

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

Do you ever have anything positive to say?  You come to the Sony board just to find something to bitch about, you're like a broken CD on repeat...

Everything you say is one bitch post after another.... one would think you would find something more constructive to do with your time.

I get it you people are huge sony haters but enough with the stupidity.

Get BC and pay more ($500 like me) or dont get it and pay less(400) something all of you complained about for ever, the high price. You want function a you pay for it, you don't want it you don't pay for it. Its called consumer choice.

Do you need bc ?

Can you blame me? Just what has Sony done since the introduction of the PS3 to make me say anything good about them? Exactly nothing. Besides, coming over to the Sony board doesn't mean that i have to say anything positive about Sony.Catch my drift?
If Sony starts acting like a normal company, that actually gives a damn about how they do their buisness, then i will say something good about it.

You don't have to say anything nice, but make you complaint intelligent. All you do is bitch with little reasoning or thought behind it.

Why is bc so important to you, if it is why don't you just get the PS3 with bc.

Is this a joke post?

Sony have done plenty of things. They are introducing new IP's to gaming, taking High Definition to the next level, lowering costs as much as possible and have a very exciting gaming lineup ahead.

Microsoft for example kept producing knowingly faulty 360's for 2 ****ing years before they admitted there was even a hardware problem and decided to fix it and still charged full price for the product. Nintendo ducktaped 2 Gamecubes together, added Waggle and called it their next gen console.

See what I did there? I focused on all the negatives. It's very easy to do that if your mind is closed before you even enter the thread or discussion. You should try getting some air, maybe it will assist in you opening your eyes and mind to being more accepting.

^ So that makes your posts more intelligent than mine (please say yes and let's get this charade over with)? Because when i see someone writing stfu in a post as a way to express one's attitude and personal beliefs, yeah, i think "that's so intelligent of him". Haw.
