...well I liked the list :P

No matter what anyone says the PS2 vastly widen the video game userbase, and deserves to be number 1.

I'd be scared to see where video games would be today if it wern't for Playstation.

(Try not to quote me to much, I know I'm going to get yelled at for this, but thats just my opinion)

Nothing against you opinion, but id LOVE to see where games today would be without Playstation!

Sega would still be around, there would be far less moneyhatting, so overwhelming focus of the media on to a self proclaimed harcore gamer group, no need for games to constantly push for having violence and gore. No more games that threw cutscenes at you instead of gameplay in the name of "Cinematic Experience"

Oh and i dont think platformers would be dead, microsoft would never have joined the game so nintendo would still have rare (imagine still haveing awesome BK and DKC games!!!

Third parties would still be able to exist on Nintendo and Sega platforms, oh and dont say that wed still be using cartridges, CD was just a natural progression (albeit one that nintendo really dropped the ball on)

/rant

(sorry if this seems a bit rantish, stupid thesis experiemnts are giving me trouble)

Haha it does sound a bit like that! Could always just be that im being overly nostalgic...

Shouldn't a top console list be about hardware quality and not software quality?

The PS2 helped developers create great games for sure, but that weird controller with the weird analog stick placements and other things like that should make it drop from #1 to somewhere else quite easily.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

First Generation: Very difficult to determine.  Likely very low.

Second Generation: At least 36 million.  Possibly a little higher.

Third Generation (NES): At least 75 million.  Possibly a little higher.  This is a 108% increase over the previous generation.

Fourth Generation (SNES): About 88 million.  This is a 17% increase over the previous generation.

Fifth Generation (PS): About 146 million.  This is a 66% increase over the previous generation.

Sixth Generation (PS2): About 196 million.  This is a 34% increase over the previous generation.

Seventh Generation (Wii): So far 108 million.

It looks to me like both the NES and first PlayStation did more to expand gaming than the PS2.

PC - Borderlands 2 (2012)

I thought the comparable PC gaming experience I had during the years of the PS1/PS2 in my experience was so completely better than the experience of console gamers that I actually felt sorry for the kids at school who were forced to play on the inferior consoles.

I liked console gaming up until the point when the PS1/PS2 were released. I thought they had actually ruined gaming and I thought the Playstation 1 was the biggest piece of shit ever with unresponsive controls, bad framerate, ugly graphics (Sega Megadrive games were colourful and clean)

Please don't be offended by my childhood/teen opinion of gaming. But that was my first impression of the Playstation.

What makes a gaming console the best is what it brought to video gaming that did not exist (or was overlooked by the vast majority) before. Otherwise it comes down to sales.

Atari brought in transferrable media (the cartridge), PS1 brought in multi-media (CD playback), Dreamcast brought in online, though arguably online was still in the marginal category until XB1 came out, so you could say XB1 = Dreamcast wrt bringing online to console gaming, Gameboy brought in mobile gaming, PS2 brought in motion control (Eyetoy).

Of course it was really PC/home computer that brought all these things to gaming, apart from motion control. So you could say that PS2 represents the only true gaming innovation brought in by consoles. In that respect PS2 does deserve #1 but not for the reasons stated in the OP.

And in respect of real innovation what has this gen brought to the table? Nothing really, it's brought a great deal of refinement and advancement to existing technology, but there's been nothing particularly innovative to arise from anyone. And don't say Natal, Natal still finds it's genesis in the eyetoy of the PS2.

Beloved games, improved graphics, 3-D game design etc etc are all either a matter of opinion or reflective of a natural advancement in technology and the creative freedom it progressively provides.

Yeah... if you count the Eyetoy as motion control then you have to count the Powerglove...

@Nazna: Didn't the magnavox odyssey have the first light gun game/IR controls?

Okay, here is inarguably the perfect top 10!

10. Wii
9. 360
8. Genesis
7. PS3
6. N64
5. 2600
4. PlayStation
3. SNES
2. PS2
1. NES

If you replace PS3 by Wii this list would be perfect...

Edit : Taking into account that handhelds are excluded.

I agree with you

1   2   3  not only you and me.

Livin' in sin is the new thing.
