But i agree, the game got a lot of flak that it didn't necessarily deserve. Really, the two sides seperately just sort of filtered apart the two elements that everyone praised the Genesis games for: speed and platforming. Both sides did both well, they just needed to combine them together (maybe with a Twilight Princess-esque transformation mechanism)

^ Or just slower acceleration for Sonic and some platforming layout here and there on the stages, like in the old games.

Exploring the levels was also very fun in the 2D games. Especially in Sonic CD where exploring the huge levels in the past could get you a good future, and in S3&K to find the entrances to special stages.

Yeah i like the new 3-d sonic games, unleashed is great.
