Forums - Gaming - Some UK opinions of the 40G PS3

Looking at earlier PR announcements and comments made by officials in Sony earlier in the launch we see a great deal to suggest in-fighting within the higher ranks of the corporation and a frantic effort to synchronize PR relations which were making contradicting announcements all the time. The company is not used to managing damage control and up until this point has only known how to pat themselves on the back for being #1.

Exactly. In essence, the net effect of all of this can only reduce Sony's image in the public opinion, something they can ill afford at this point. Even if they do release the 80GB in other regions, they will most likely not be supporting the BC with any more updates. So why bother? Unless there is a huge backlash from the general public, I think they will leave PS3 BC in the dust.

Really, all this seems to be is an attempt to position the PS3 as an affordable Blu-ray player to help Sony in the HD format war, and not designed in any way to aid the audience of actual gamers.

Actually, GooseGaws that's not true. They're discontinuing the 60gb in Europe, the 80gb will still be avaliable in the US.

It's pretty much obvious that when the 60gb sells out in the Europe, the 80gb will be released there. And when the 60gb sells out in the US, the 80gb will drop to $499.

As for Japan, I'm not sure, I think that Sony will first discontinue the 20gb as that makes everything more confusing (the 40gb is cheaper than the 20gb). I'm not sure whether they'll discontinue the 60gb or release the 80gb first.

I think it's pretty much inevitable that Europe and the US will both have just the 40 and the 80 by March next year. And most likely that Japan will just have the 40 and the 80 by some point next year.
Obvious? Don't make me laugh. Since when has anything, besides the ridiculously big price, about the PS3 been obvious ? People keep repeating stuff as if it were a mantra, that there will surely be an 80 gb sku introduced in Europe, that once the 60 gb sku sells out there will be another price cut  etc, etc. So far Sony hasn't done anything right. It can't even make money off it's own products. Further on, it's kind of hard to actually get money back off games that cost over 50$ and 50 euros. People just don't buy too many expensive games. So as i said, Sony has been anything but buissness wise thus far. What's even more disappointing is that people keep  saying things like stated above. If things WERE right, we wouldn't have this sku circus going on right now.

lol, i agree this shows no indication of what true demand there is for the 40GB, especially as i would imagine it's a strange selection of gamers who send in messages to teletext, But that doesn't make the thread pointless...I never stated this confirmed in any way no one likes the 40GB....i just posted some opinions of random selection of people put on teletext. In no way does it show what the countrywide opinions are on it in the same way that you can't take the general conscensus of the posters on this website and use it as any evidence.

I was thinking of maybe posting one each weekend (i think they do a different topic every weekend because last time i checked was last saturday and it was all about Halo3)...or at least posting the vaguely interesting ones. I only did it because i have just started making topics and as i don't go searching through the internet all the time i don't get to any news stories in time (after watching the sales the main reson i come here is to hear news about whats going on)....This was something i don't think anyone else has done.....If it's pointless then so are the rest of the threads on this site that are not simply announcing news (which is most of them)

oh and Sony have said a couple of times before that they have no plans to release the 80GB in Europe, which pretty much gives us a 50% chance of it actually being released here (probably with less functionality than the US though)

Well, I personally don't believe that they will stop releasing updates for the B/C. The PS1 emulator is basically 100% done anyways, and I think they will make minor improvements to the PS2 emulator with every release.

It makes no difference to me as I can play all of my PS2 games now (with the exclusion of the Ratchet games, they lag like a bitch unless youplay in first person mode. Which the game game isn't designed to do).

Well, it does make a difference in the long run, as less B/C results in less sales, which results in less T/P which results in less games for me.

But, hey, if the Nintendo fans could live with it last generation, I can cope with it this generation.

Well walking into Game yesterday in Plymouth was good to see a PS3 say £299. However, 2 people looking at it stated it has not got good games. I didnt know these guys just listening to their conversations. Also although I own 360 I think it's wrong that the staff there are telling people that they should get wii or 360. Once I heard a staff member say to a guy that it was a pointless purchase. Thats pretty bad in my eyes. People should make their own choices! It will have some good games of there own merrit.

Well, they either lie about discontinuing the 60gb and continue to make it. Or they release the 80gb. Ones got to happen, Sony must know the sales they'll loose if they don't.

Not exactly. Remeber that a lot of people want some info before thay buy a product, that's why they ask for someone's opinion. Therefore he didn't say it as astore clerk but as an individual. Hell he might have said that the Wii is a waste of time and no one could say a bad word about it. But he was right that it is a pointless purchase as of right now. The good games are going to appear later on, right now there aren't any killer games that that you couldn't buy on the xbox360. Wii is in a league of it's own right now, so no point in bringing it into the pointless/not pointless arguement.

well i agree with that, the staff should not be forcing their opinions onto customers (they can happily state their opinion) i heard a few stories of other staff in Game telling people not to buy a Wii though as well...though it was early 2007 they probably dont do it anymore.....I would bet they don't tell anyone not to get a 360 because that usually means more games will be bought from the store, which means more store profit.

What staff should do is advise them on the features of the consoles, particularly with the PS3 because it has changed it's features. But also with the 360 because of one models lack of hard-drive/wireless.
I would say that they also need to tell them about firmware updates because i heard a 360 owner in a gamestation asking about a game and the guy at the till was saying it might not work fully if he hadn't updated the system online, which he hadn't (am i right in thinking you have to buy certain games to update without the internet?...for instance you could buy a new game that wont work because it needs the newest update which is only on certain games.)

@SamuelRSmith:

Sony has specifically stated that they are no longer devoting any resources to BC. If they are shown once again to be blatantly lying (which I'm not denying is a possibility), this can only be negative for them.
