No, he doesn't know it for a fact at all. Despite the fact that Wii is much more powerful than a mid 90's computer they ran online just fine with a background OS.

What he is failing to understand is the way Wii was designed in relation to its OS (of which it certainly has one and you enter it every time you power up the console) and the server infrastructure established for Wii.

Will it ever be just like the HD twins? No, but it's not because of the lack of processing power but by design and infrastructure.
