Forums - Sales - PS3 to catch 360 / Wii to reach 50% requirements. End of August update.

so PS3 will never catch 360 & wii will never get 50%?

Then again this is a nice reality check, even though the holidays skew these numbers up a lot

Yes reality checks are nice.  Maybe we should do it for PS3 and Wii in Japan because I still hear it thrown out that PS3 will catch Wii there.  With an approximate 5.15 million difference for PS3 to catch it by the end of 2010 it would need to outsell it by 321,000 units per month or 80,000 a week.  By the end of 2011 it would need to outsell it by 184,000 a month or 46,000 a week.  And by the end of 2012 it would need to outsell it by 128,000 a month or by 32,000 a week.

Now that's a reality check haha.  To people it seems easier when they just see the differences but when you put it in motion, it looks that much harder.  Good thread.

Yeah.. that's pretty much what I got out of that as well. The PS3 is not going to outsell the XBox 360 by 500K a month for the next 2.5yrs. By 2012 a new XBox or Wii system will be announced and released to market. When that happens, this generation will be over. I still see Microsoft doing more price cut before this generation is over. Eventually the XBox 360 will be selling for $129 or less in another couple of years. People who have never even touched a game controller will probably be buying one then.

I love these gap charts update. Keep up the good work kowenicki. You are a wonderful asset to VGChartz.

i think at this point Sony cares more about profitability then passing the 360.

you cant just expect every week to be average. You have to take into first week sales of ps3 slim, which might be in the next weekly sales (might) also the holidays, game releases, motion controller, bundling etc etc.

I don't think you understand what the word "average" means.  It doesn't mean what it typically sells, it means the number you get when you take the total sales and divide by the number of weeks.

For example, if the console sells 100k units for 4 weeks, and then 25k units for the next 4 it sold an average of 62,500 units per week, even though it never actually sold exactly that much in a week.  So the console's average sales take into account both the massive holiday sales and the dismal summer sales.  It evens out.

Why did they release the slim and bring in a price cut then? if they wasn't losing money before they certainly are now on each system, that is not the way to go for profit!

Nice work, thanks for the charts as always.

Because their sales were down YoY.

The ps3 was selling less than it did in 2008.

They would have preferred to stay at 400$ but they were facing extinction.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

so its a given that wii is not gonna be toppled.. period.. the best the HD twins can hope to do is condense the wii market share to 40%(provided we get a 360slim too) but its prolly gonna hover at 45%

thanx for the tables kowenchi...

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.
