A while back, Square Enix said that it didn’t have plans to release downloadable content for its highly anticipated Final Fantasy XIII, because such a move would suggest that the game wasn’t completed at launch. Well, according to RPGSite (via VG247), Square has apparently changed its perspective on DLC, or at least the prospect of DLC, for its upcoming RPG.

However, as FFXIII Producer Yoshinori Kitase explains, the DLC won’t be used to expand the game’s story, but rather will simply offer new gameplay opportunities.

“We are exploring the option of downloadable content, perhaps adding new areas, items or enemies, but these would not be expansions to the story, only the gameplay. The entire story of FFXIII will be on the disc.”

Anyone have any strong feelings for or against DLC for Final Fantasy XIII? Would you prefer it to be story-based, or is gameplay-only the way to go?

If it has nothing to do with the story they might as well not bother. They'll just end up releasing some GOTY edition with 2 new swords.

I think companies need to hold off when it comes to DLC for certain types of games! I mean for FPS it is great to get another map pack to play online with, such as the ones i use in Warhawk, but when it comes to mainly Story games like FF etc DLC should be a HUGE no no!

I dunno. I like the idea of them adding mega dungeons for after story content. Or adding a new hidden character.

A Cloud costume.
New summons.
New bosses with new dungeon.
