Forums - Microsoft - XBOX Portable - Can MS Exploit That Area (Cool CONCEPT Designs)

I dont think MS will do this. Wll they will but not in a manner you are expecting...

1. MS doesnt make or sell hardware from profit. Introducing a next gen handheld console is R&D MS won't do internally hence they won't bother.

2. Xbox360 gaming on a portable console would not appeal to the masses like some new simple portbale experience. For portable console simple games are king. My PSP would be all dust if it didn't play snes and genesis roms.

3. Xbox live is main selling point of xbox360 and portable console would need an internet connection at all times to provide similar experience. They would need a handheld console thats also a phone and can get 3G GPRS connection...

4. I believe Zune will expand to a point where it will have a product that will be able to connect to xbox live and download select xbox live games and play on the go. Achievements, friends lists, video downloads are already supported by the almost release zune HD.

Zune HD is going to have an Apps store as well.

@JaggedSac

Yeah, I hope it gets lots of dev support.

Zune-snes emulation anyone? :)

This is the only reason I find portable gaming interesting...hacks and cool apps.

^MS should kill the Zune brand. It will never take off.

Samsung, Google and Sony have much better chance to compete with Apple.

@Dah

no PSP 2 will have 2 joysticks

Did you just make up a handheld (and added some wishful thinking) or have I missed something? The PSP Go is the new PSP or has Sony realized the ugly design + small upgrade won't float anyone's boat?

Just based on what it out there in the handheld market, there is room for a revolutionary handheld with thumbsticks. But it would have to be a big device and if it's supposed to be a Xbox Portable that plays Xbox games then it's one expensive (if not technically impossible) device aswell. Such a device would only cater to the hardcore gamer market and that's relatively small when it comes to handhelds. I don't think it would be very profitable for Microsoft, it's better to concerntrate on the core product which is currently the Xbox 360.

PSP Go! =/= PSP2

Wow...talk about negativity, lol.

Zune is quite successful for what it is in USA. The music download subscription program they have (20 bucks all you can download) rapes any service Itunes offers. This is where MS makes money.

While in Europe it may be different here in Canada, Zune has a very positive buzz around it and while it will never beat Ipod in sales...it has a reputation of offering a better service for less $$$. I am fine with that as I like features and paying less for them...and don't care about being in majority.

If u hear on TV, everyone is familiar with Ipod and Iphone. Even granny's know of them. No one knows what Zune is (plus it's a bad name, it don't sound too good on the tongue).

Zune doesnt sound bad at all in English I think. Plus once the product has great features it can have the dumbest name in the world. Google for example...

I think Ms should stick with zune for another few years, see if its profitable ovearall then make the call how to proceed.

Yeah, the Google name really sux! You do have a point.

I wonder how many sales Zune have compared to Impod. Maybe not even 5% of Ipod's sales? It's not even available in Europe, at least not in my country. Ive never ever seen anyone mention Zune here in Sweden, nor a review or an ad or listing in an online store, nothing.

^
Yeah sales have not been there at all. Zune sold good at the start but the Ipod Touch destroyed its thunder. Last year they sold very poorly.

I dont mind this though. Zune reviews have been grat across the board and features are excellent. Hopefully sales pick up and the Zune vs Ipod war heats up. Those ipods are still way to overpriced...
