LOS ANGELES - The Walt Disney Co. says it is acquiring Marvel Entertainment Inc. for $4 billion in cash and stock, bringing characters like Iron Man and Spider-Man into the Disney family.

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of 5,000 Marvel characters.

Disney said Monday that Marvel shareholders will receive $30 per share in cash plus 0.745 Disney shares for every Marvel share they own.

It said the boards of Disney and Marvel have both approved the transaction, but it requires an antitrust review and the approval of Marvel shareholders.

Wow..I must say, I think this is horrible. Imagine Disney trying to make all the comics non violent and family friendly? Is the next Ironman movie going to be about fighting broom sticks now?

I don't like this. I don't like Disney. Then again, I don't have kids right now..so I'm sure when I do, I'll love Disney, but right now - not so much.

I don't think this will affect the actual Marvel comics much, but hopefully it can increase production values of stuff like videogames so we might see a really good video game based off of a marvel property or something like that. At the moment, I'm cautiously optimistic about this.

I think they can do better than that. How about Marvel vs. Kingdom Hearts. Just add some more characters to Dissidia and put it on one of the home consoles.

What'll happen with the films which are not being filmed/published by Disney?

I'm guessing they'll have to keep it as it is right now due to contracts, but over time more and more of the films will go 100% through Disney?
