Maybe the very fact that there's hundreds of RPG titles on the DS and it resembles many of the Konami/Namco/SE RPG titles, but without anything to distinguish it from the pack. I mean, when I was looking at the preview, it pretty much just looked like a generic RPG to me. Generic character design + FMV sequences + flying ships. What's to set it apart from say FFIV DS or Suikoden Tierkreis or heck, Skies of Arcadia in design?
The final nail in its coffin is probably DQIX, which made most JRPGs in Japan sell less this year.

You're probably right, although I don't think Dragon Quest had anything to do with it (Nostalgia's Japanese release was many months ago, possibly even last year, although I'd have to double-check).
I don't know how it could be considered that generic. It's story certainly isn't. It's set in a steampunk version of the nineteenth century on earth where you visit actual places on earth. I think it's going to have a story that could be conmpare to Earthbound in some respects because I'm expecting certain historical personages maybe Aleister Crowley or Rasputin to make cameos.
