Alterego-X said: What I find disturbing about the whole pro-homo arguments, is this whole "appeal to nature" fallacy, that sounds something like this: "The were born like this, it's not their decision" "Even animals do it, it's natural" "They are just following their urges"
But they conveniently ignore, that in a society, NO ONE can perfectly follow their natural urges, because society restricts us by common morals, even if they don't make much sense.
Obviously, when someone else is got hurt, it's bad, so it's understandable why you are not allowed to kill someone when you feel a natural urge to do so. But what about cases when no one gets hurt?
A few weeks ago, there was an incest thread, and most people where freaked out simply for "Oh no! That's just disgusting, and WRONG!" without proper reasons. Most of us understand that there is a taboo, against consensual incest between two adults, and don't do it, even opress urges. The same goes for necrophilia, cannibalism, exhibitionism, and generally lots of weird fetishes that people are expected to keep for themselves only because they are disgusting.
I kinda miss the time when homosexuality was one of these. |
O.o I thought homophobic/anti-homosexual proponents use the nature argument for their purpose, like the OP did saying that it biologically doesn't make sense, that it's the natural state for it to be a woman and man, we need to keep the population rolling, etc.
I don't think taboo is completely a natural thing and inheritated by birth. I'm sure that we humans will automatically feel nateuseus if we see things like murder (although I don't know if I'll consider that a taboo...), but not all humans feel sick when they see people eating, lets say goat testicles and rotten shark. Taboo is a result of socilization. In some countries, and ages, incest wasn't looked down upon as much, and even practiced by the nobility.
And I don't think we should opress urges due to socialization and taboo... we thought it was taboo for a black and white person to get married, to not be clothed from head to toe, etc. We shouldn't expect people to keep to themselves because they think it's digusting, but using rational thinking.
The problem with canibalism is that someone else has to die in the purpose >.< And although I'm not sure about this, I think our doctors consider somebody mentally disturbed/depressed/etc if they consent to suicide.
