Forums - Gaming - Sony lose 100 dollars ever PS3 slim, when will they learn?

Link

"The newly announced slimline PS3 offers a new form factor, a higher capacity hard drive, reduced noise output and a lower price point compared to the current system. There has to be a catch, right? For Sony, there might be."

"Today's episode of a general interest TV Tokyo news program called Pipitto! Keizai Koukishin covered Sony's Gamescom announcement of the new PS3 system. To help understand Sony's pricing strategy, the program turned to an analyst at Daiwa Institute of Research."

"The slide lists the material cost for the PS3 as ¥40,000. The announcer explains that a price drop to ¥29,800 means that Sony's losses will increase with each system they sell. However, if they increase their sales, the material cost will gradually go down, and so too will the losses."

What's up with the drunken analysts lately? :P

They would have to get a lot of sales to make up for 10k yen (approximately US$100) of differences based upon reductions for large orders.

It's a big news channel/site in Japan, TV Tokyo.  You can't say they don't know what they're talking about, they know a hell of a lot more than you do.  I watched the video i can't say it's accurate for sure because I don't know what the claimed source is but they can't just post bullshit all the time and get away with it either.  I wouldn't be so quick to call TV Tokyo bullshit.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Option A: Keep the price $399, let the PS3 sink, get no real boost before Natal, software sales plummit, publishers get pissed off along with retailers, Sony earns a little on hardware, not alot on software.

Option B: Cut price to $299, give the console a big boost before Natal and for the festive period, get more consumers = a ton more games and peripherals sold in the future, meaning publishers, retailers and to some extent Sony are happy.

Think long term, outside the box.
