For comparison:

Sept 2007 - 329k

Oct 2007 - 548k

Nov 2007 - 1.35 million

Dec 2007 - 1.98 million

Keep in mind that Sony launched the 40gb SKU in late August in 2007 for $399.  It had a much weaker September than ioi is estimating for the Slim, but the Slim is hitting the first weak of September instead of late August.  The new price, however, hit in August both times.

Edit: Also, the Slim is hitting August 24th in NA.  That's tomorrow. That means it's only hitting in September in Europe and Japan.

Edit 2: The 40gb didn't hit until October!  So that certainly changes things.

I think ioi is a little low in his prediction for september. Possibly 100,000 first week for slim in NA. So worldwide we could be looking at 230K first week. I expect September to pan out like this:

1st week: 230,000

2nd week: 180,000

3rd week: 160,000

4th week: 145,000

Total for September: 715,000

Then for the rest of the year:

October: 650,000

November: 1,200,000

December: 2,300,000

Total for the rest of the year: 4,865,000

I think we have to consider the economy in all this, as well. Personally, I think that if it wasn't for the slim/price-cut, all three consoles (and probably the PSP) would have seen worse winter sales than last year, and possibly, for the PS3, the year before.

The combination of the terrible winter that the ps3 had last year, and the slim/price-cut means that it will buck the trend, but I don't expect sales to explode. Less, I think the sales will do really well in gaining marketshare simply because the market expansion will be smaller.

Actual unit sales, though, I don't think will be massive.

Considering that, the 2008 holiday doesn't look as bad as some were saying before...

^ Last year was awful for Sony in terms of marketshare, YoY sales weren't down a huge amount, just the 360's were up a considerable amount.

^ Yeah the perception of an awful 2008 holiday seems to be more related to the competition than the PS3 sales themselves... considering in 2007 the PS3 had a 200 € price cut before the holidays in Europe, and a $100 price cut in the US, the 2008 numbers don't look bad at all in comparison.

40gb was released in october.
there was almost a 200k increase, form september.
