Forums - Sales - NPD Predicts PS3 Sales To Increase By 40-60% After Price Drop

Its an expectation guys.. and it has nothing to do with the PS3 SLIM, its only to do with August numbers..

Also the PS3 had like 110K last month, so a 50% increase would push it to around 180K.

I expect the PS3 to sell 200K at the lowest for August numbers(slim is released late august), maybe brushing over 300K.

That's what I thought so too but apparently the article refers to the full month of September and the increase is just way too low.

$300 was the launch price for the 360 4 years ago, the market is pretty saturated right now for those who want an HD console at the $300 price point. I think when we see a $150 or less 360 Arcade its game over for PS3. I think they are waiting for Natal to go for the throat.

Oh yes it can. 299$ is the sweet spot in price.

Look at what it did to 360 sales last september... Except it will be a lot worse with 120 million PS2 owners who were waiting on the sidelines.

360 did well, because it had an offering at the $199 level. [1]

Its a temporary measure, not a value creator. [2]

Hell, GT5 and FF13 will have a bigger effect on PS3 sales. [3]

1.  Really?  The Pro after the price decreases wasn't the best-selling?  At any rate all models must have increased in sales after the price drop.

2.  Not permanent, nothing we're discussing is, but it will lift sales.  PS3 was slapping 360 around until 360 dropped in price to get well clear of the PS3's price point.

3.  Very temporarily.  I myself said before gamescon that a $349 slim, w/ GT5 released in 09, would be better for Sony than a $299 slim without GT5... but now here we are with the lower price point, and if GT5 does drop this November....look out!

Yeah... I mean... the 400 price point must have been saturatewd because thats what the 360 was at for 2 years before the ps3... I mean... it was clear that after the ps3 dropped to 400 dollars in '07 it didn't help because 360 already took the people at that price.

BTW- I expect more than a 50% increase in sep from july since I am translating this as "we expect 40 - 60% increase in SEP numbers from AUG numbers" and I fully expect Aug to have an increase because of a 2 week price drop AND 1 week of slim.

im thinking more like a 200-300% increase, it will easily sell 400 to 500 thousand systems a month at that price, it will outsell the Wii easily for at least a year, and catch the 360 in as little as 18 months, this is depending on how many systems Sony can crank out, it's gonna happen people.

lol. I think you will be seriously disappointed in a month.  I agree that it will be able to sell at least 500 thousand a month, but the wii is selling that in 2 weeks. It may outsell the wii in september, but not after that.  And the xbox will also increase sales after their price cut, so it won't catch up to 360 in 18 months. It might not ever. I think you're overestimating the price cut effect a bit.

@mario64

I think you need to revisit your mathematics regarding your percentage calculations.

Percentage increases are relevant to a given value. They cannot be directly compared as you have done.

For example I have 100 apples

I lose 50 percent so I have 50 apples but I then gain 50 percent.

It doesnt get me all my apples back.

September NPD USA will see at least 390,000 PS3s sold.

You can quote me on this.

Okay that the jump for first week and first month will be huge, but it don't mean nothing and won't impact lifetime sales if the increase don't have longevity and sales comeback to normal after a month or two. Hell, instead of discussing how much it will grow for the first week or month you should discuss if the price cut will give reliable boost for a year or so, this is the point that is really important.
