Actually, the "live sex" Edge and Lita bit is the highest rated segment in WWE history, since it beat out "This Is Your Life". And the reason you liked it as a kid was because the whole wrestling industry had to keep amping itself up. The Monday Night Wars led to content being edgy, risky, and pushing the envelope (with the live sex scene just being a lasting result of the "Attitude Era") . Now that WWE has pretty much no competition, they don't have to take risks with their content and can go back to what it was originally: kid friendly.
If another wrestling promotion does to WWE what WCW did, you can bet your ass much more creative stuff will happen across the board. Until then, things will remain mild.
And btw, although there wasn't any penetration, Lita was naked under those sheets and Edge went down on her. At least, that's what Edge said. He wanted to really sell it, so he actually took off her bra and panties and went south. They weren't supposed to do that, just kinda clothesburn under the sheets, but Edge said he wanted to sell it as much as possible.
