Forums - Sony - Sony: NO PS2 Backwards Compatibility On PS3, Never, Ever,

So the slim is really 425$? So the Fat version would be cheaper...

At least there making a profit.

I'm quite honestly surprised at Sony. I would imagine simply having all your software playable from more consoles means more software sales. Why not milk them to death? VC was quite successful you know. Otaku and geeks will eat it up with their large HDDs. Ask Nintendo.

Wha wha what?!

Hubdha hubdha huh?

Shubdha shubdha ah! *snaps fingers*

Sony just saved you 100$ off of the price of a slim version of the ps3, why don't you take that money and buy a slim ps2 with that 100$? I guess some people are never satisfied, personally I don't play any ps2 games anymore so it does not bother me (I am getting a slim ps3), but I know some people are still partial to last gen.

I think he's just referring to having the emotion chip in the PS3...

They'll probably introduce PS2 downloads with emulation in a future update. This might mean that the emulation can't handle a PS2 game, but it would work with a modified PS2 game.

Companies don't just invest into emulation coding and patent it, while simultaneously having an effective means of distribution, without ever intending to use it.

does half this site have a huge ps2 library but no ps2 or something?

just buy a 30 $ PS2 on ebay and hook it up to a crt tv, it will look alot better than on an lcd tv.

they could be launching a ps3 slim with b/c next week, but still they will flat out deny it, much like with all the SLIM rumors last month.

O ya... It's BACK !.... lol

Rumour: Full PS3 backwards compatibility only weeks away

Wednesday, 01 Jul 2009 11:51
PlayStation 3

As Sony's backwards compatibility patents make the rounds, a German website has supposedly gained comment from a Sony employee.

We were quick to point out that the unearthed Sony patents for the emulation of the PS2's CPU (Emotion Engine) on the PlayStation 3 did not imply full backwards compatibility. This was for the simple fact that the PS3 had already been software emulating the Emotion Engine since early-2007 when it was ripped out of European PS3s.

However, the fact remained that the patent was filed in December 2008 with a publication date of only last week.

This brings us to the German website DemoNews.de, which claims to have gained comment from a Sony employee stating that full backwards compatibility is coming to US PS3's as a firmware update in the "next few weeks."

A European release date for the update has not yet been determined, but if there's any credibility in this news, we expect it drop at around the same time as the US update. Pinch of salt people, big pinch of frickin' salt.
