Forums - Gaming - Gabe Newell says the PS3 is a waste of everybody's time

It is quite possible that Gabe Newell has simply eaten too many PS3s.  His unending hunger requires new flavors.

I am not technical or anything but about MikeB statement.

"Technically I think the PS3 is powerful enough to render a game like Halo 3 in 1080p at 60 FPS together with additional effects, with twice the content, higher quality 7.1 audio and localization on a single disc"

Cant 360/PS3 do such game in several years? This is just 1-2 years in the generation games will look much better then that.

Ummmm ... no

Jumping from 720p/1080i to 1080p is twice as many pixels and thus requires twice the processing power in your shader hardware on your GPU; increasing the effects (in most cases) demands increased processing power per pixel in your shader hardware on your GPU.

Adding effects (in particular texture based effects) can increase the development time for every piece of content in the game (thus increasing the budget) and increasing the ammount of content increases the budget of the game.

For developers to be taking so little advantage of the system for this to be possible they would have to be second or third year computer science students with no industry experience. I don't believe that Epic or Bungie is being run by second or third year computer science students with no industry experience.

well this isn't the first time he opened his month on the PS3. He spoke to GameInformer about a year ago and say the same thing.

Coming from a former MS employee, I'm not surprised.

Yeah, its cuz hes biased.  I mean, him also going out saying DX10 and vista are a waste of time are just a ploy to make him look like he really isnt biased when he does in fact try to talk crap about the ps3, yeah.  Not to mention, he hated the damn x360 before also.

Read the full interview rather then saying hes biased for microsoft, cuz in that same interview he mentions his original dislike for the x360.  Only reason hes into it now is because developing for it is similar to developing for a pc.

@Mars.  Do you realise how difficult it is to develop for PCs?  Developing for consoles in a way is easy compared to PCs, cuz no matter what, the system is always going to be the same specs and hardware, hence ur working with only one setup.

PC on the other hand, you have to develop a game to be able to work and support hundreds of different types of computer setups and combinations.  A console has one setup, and its not hard to know exactly how every part of the system is going to react to the other.  PCs, u got to deal with setups that each have differing GPUs, CPUs, MOBOs, differing Bios setups and what not.  You got to try and make sure its going to work for all that.

Maybe you should read it again because he bashed Windows Visa not Xbox360.

I'll take the case!!!

I dont want to bash Sony, but I did tell Mike b that he was talking Sh*t. However good luck to sony.

I am fully aware that a lot of developers consider the PS3 a difficult platform to develop on, but I don't buy games based on how much simplicty, or lack there of, it took to develop them. He's entitled to his statement, being a part of game development projects.

I do, however, have some beef with his statement. Saying the PS3 is "a waste of everyone's time" is extremely untethical, especially in such position in the gaming industry. He didn't just insult Sony, no, and I personally don't care if he insults Sony, but he insulted the fans of Sony. The people who may be willing to buy his Orange Box game, the people who happen to also have a PC with Half Life installed with hours of game play clocked in, and most of all, the gaming community that spent its hard earned money on a system they wanted.

I think his choice of words were poor, and I think he should be more considerate of the gaming community's feelings. I was planning on considering The Orange Box, regardless of it most likely being a washed down port, but why would I buy a game from such a **bleep** head now?

Like I said, I don't care if he says "Sony sucks for making it hard for me," but I think it is unethical to say it's "a waste of everyone's time" because now it's just an insult to the innocent gaming community that spent its hard earned money on the system they wanted.

I may be misinterpreting his statement of "everyone's time." He may mean all the developers' and investors' time, but even then it's a statement that'll hurt Sony's innocent gamers. I like the PS3, and I don't care what other people like because I live and let die, but I wouldn't want to see "Gabe Newell's remarks swayed 3rd party devs into not making anymore PS3 games" on IGN's front page. Of course, that'll never happen.

I think he should consult Insomniac games to help him understand the PS3 better--that way everyone wins. BTW Ratchet & Clank is amazing. ;)

X_X Reading all of this is a waste of time.

On the flip side to the coin, I see his point. I only own 360 at the mo. And I have to wait on some big titles to come just because it takes an extra 6 months to get the same results on the PS3. That pisses me off.

I see where you're coming from, and that's why I think Sony's 1st and 2nd party devs should help out third parties. Either Sony isn't willing to allow the help, or the third parties are just that stuck up. Either way, they need to help each other out.

Of course, this isn't only a PS3 problem. From what I understand, GTA4 wasn't going down well in the 360, and Microsoft surely payed for simultaneous release. So anything that goes wrong with the 360 version hereinafter is going to effect the PS3 release date. It is pretty sickening.

Classy. I get the feeling you're the type of person who tells random strangers to 'pull my finger' and thinks its hilarious.
