Forums - Sony - Sony Explain Why The PS3 Slim Has No Backwards Compatibility

Thats great Sony...I may never play God of war 2 now.

It's funny that Nintendo and MS both have BC in their consoles - giving gamers a chance to play Halo 1 - Halo 2 - the old skool Mario Kart, Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader, Donkey Konga and other games - without the need of buying the other systems.

I do still play older games - why stop playing them, unless you are a graphics whore. A gamer loves games - old and new - not just graphic masterpieces with gameplay that just downright sucks.

Bad move, Sony. You need to check your research.

What, son, what? New York, New York!!!

^Some people still enjoy to play the games they used to play and enjoy, others may have not played the game before and want to try it out. I imagine a lot of PS3 owners haven't played the God of War games so if they play # 3 then they might want to play the earlier ones. The same applies to any other game that has prequels on the PS2.
EX: Ratchet and Clank and Metal Gear Solid.

Can you honestly tell me that people who buy and play God of War 3 didn't play the previously two? If there is its a very small group of people.

Obviosuly a couple years down the road (maybe even sooner) they'll bring back B/C more then likely through a PS Update

But theres no sense in killing off the PS2 now, it's still selling pretty decently for a 9 year old console.

Just buy a ps2 if u guys really want to play your ps2 games their cheap now anyways

I am a loyal SONY fan and will always be.

I am also a PS1, PS2, PS3 and a PSP owner.

It's selling because of price and a stellar gaming lineup. Why wouldn't Sony want to toss a few carrots to gamers? Folks think the PS3 is the PS2. It's not. It's a cool console - a great value now at $299 - but doesn't have any real killer games - exclusives - that propelled the PS2. Sony squandered chances by pricing it into the statosphere, then axing features folks enjoyed. In the end, bringing back BC would win over several holdouts more than costing them money.

I think what SONY is really trying to say is" the PS2 genrates a healthy profit for us and we see no reason for us to kill it.. if you want to play PS2.. buy one.. so we will stay in the black!"

And I say, "Screw you, Sony."  After 7 years, my (second) PS2 (fat) just died this weekend (won't read discs).  I am not buying another PS2 at this point.  I have a PS3 60 GB.  All that this means is that if the 60 dies, I have no reason to ever support Sony again.  I'll just sell my library if the PS4 doesn't suit me - and that includes BC.  If it doesn't have BC, I may still buy a PS4 after the slim arrives and the price is down.  Bottom line, I won't be an early adopter for Sony ever again if my 60 dies unless PS4 offers full BC.

Sony systems are the only ones (since the NES) -  that I was an extreme early adopter for, and they are the only ones that have broken.  If I have to take that risk, I am no longer willing to pay full price.  I sure hope my 60 Gig holds out.

They have a $99 system that plasy PS2 games for anybody that's interested. If you want next gen games then buy the $299 PS3.

Afterwhile, all future consoles will not have backwards compatibility. I personally think putting BC in the slim would be "the icing on the cake" but its just my opinion.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY

Well there still making a profit on the ps2, so why lose money?
