Forums - Gaming - Will Microsoft and Nintendo Counter Sony's Price/Slim?

Nintendo should drop the Price too $199 not because of Microsoft or Sony, but because they are the only ones not to drop the price since it launched almost 3 years ago. How many pricecuts/bundles have Sony and Microsoft done. Way too many to count. Its time for Nintendo to step it up with price cuts/Bundles and colors.

They're not going to do it just because they haven't done so yet in the Wii's lifespan. They probably see price cuts as surrendering their console to a drop in value. Besides, arn't price cuts going against the Blue Ocean Strategy which Nintendo is using right now?

In other words, because they had built the system and game line-up which actually costs the price from the very start, now they shall drop it?

Nintendo's biggest competition is themselves from a year ago. Still, to stay competitive and keep momentum, I would do this:

a) Cut the price of the original Wii to $160-190 to undercut Microsoft's $200 X-box arcade.

b) Cut the price of the original Wii Fit right now by $10-20 to clear stock space for Wii Fit Plus.

c) Package Wii Sports Resort and Wii Motion Plus with Multi-Colored Wii's and call it "Wii Plus". They could even improve the design and hardware if they wanted (which they won't). Sell this for $250.

Now as for Microsoft, they are probably feeling the heat of Sony's price cut more than Nintendo. Still, the Arcade is the cheapest console on the market right now, so they can't really do much. In any case, here's what I would do:

a) Cut all versions of the Xbox 360 by $30-50

b) Get rid of the X-box Elite and make the X-box 360 the same configuration. Black and White colors can still be there but only for aesthetics.

c) Beyond the holiday season, release a slimmer, better version of the 360 that vastly improves on the horrible failure rate of the original.

d) Get moving on Natal! We need it by next year at least!

That's my two cents.

if nintendo wants em to keep retailers moving their products then they should drop the price before the holidays, the hardware isnt that expensive to manufacture

I am not saying just price cuts. Give the comsumer more choices. Which would be bundles and colors. They can keep the price at $250 but they need to offer more. $199 as a bundle would also be a great value, things like that. You are right Nintendo seems to think that its more inportant to have good software then a price cut, and I understand that. They need to spice things up a little bit.

If I were Nintendo, I would throw every peripheral, and like 10-20 major first party games into a giant bundle, and sell it for $350.
It would be a bit like a pricecut, since the whole thing would worth $1000+ at the current price, but they would still make huge profit on the hardware, and sell a gajillion units.

Any other thoughts on this?

Microsoft will have had some kind of counter planned. I just hope for their sake that an increase in hard drive size and renaming of the Pro was NOT their counter to a $100 price cut...

360 price drops confirmed, not as much as I was hoping though....

What do you think Waggle is, it's a sophisticated form of ninjujitsu that involves turning your entire essence into a counter.

~No need, the moment Psmote was announced Sony hip tossed itself out of the ring.
