The price means nothing if the consumer doesn't love the product, which is Sony's problem right now.
Price cuts are guaranteed to boost sales because there are always people holding out until it's within their price range, but how long that boost lasts and how large it will be is determined by how attractive the product is, not how cheap it is. The cheapest price in the world will not get people to buy your console unless it stands out as something worthwhile.
We've seen this before with the PS2, despite the Gamecube being way cheaper and more powerful, nothing Nintendo could do could spike consumer interest, while the PS2 was just flying off the shelves.
Similar thing this generation with the Wii, At $250 it's still outselling the competition because it has a great reputation and everyone wants one, nobody cares about what technology is in the box. it has value beyond it's technology, something PS3 has yet to secure. Every single ad I've seen for Sony has focused on the systems power, blu ray, etc. and rarely the games which is what will sell the system.
Even the recent Slim adds focus on the systems power and thigns liek blu ray, without a hint of a game.
This is one I found in another thread

It's important to have the price point stand out, but they should also advertise some of it's great exclusives with it. The uninformed person who sees this ad really knows nothing other than it's $300 and has blu ray. What are these trophies? Built in hard what?. It looks like it's trying to be a PC rather than a game machine.
I would of thrown some of the greatest hits titles on there.
