Forums - Sony - IGN : PS3 Slim unboxing . You CAN swap the HDD

Can the cell and RSX go smaller than 45 nm? If not other than a thiner disk drive where would they be able to cut the size for another revision?

Yes, and Sony could also switch to an SSD to cut things even smaller. 1.8" SSD + 32(-)nm Cell and RSX would easily make it so that things slim down even farther. With SSD tech getting cheaper if Sony decided to drop the price a very tiny amount in the next year and roll out another major SKU change, they could.

Nice to confirm that the hard drive is still swappable. Impressive that Sony didn't pull any cheese with an external power brick.

A little disappointing that there are no HD cables included, though. Further evidence that HD isn't important?

It's like buying a printer. The manufacturer could just put a usb cable in the damn box for next to nothing yet it's sold seperately so retail stores sell one for $5-$30. With the slim sony is surely counting pennies as well, and HDMI out of the box is secondary to even minimal cost savings. Not including an HDMI cable (just as they didn't with the fat ps3) again allows retail stores to sell the customer overpriced cables to help their margins.

Well considering Wal-Mart has no mark-up on the consoles to speak of, we need accessories like HDMI to earn any form of profit.

whats ssd?

Solid State Drives, basically flash memory based data storage.

Looks nicer than the pics.

No Brick + Swappable HDD = Win

I like it. If my system completely dies, I'll upgrade. Hopefully that won't be for another 8 years :P

4 ≈ One

I don't think SSD 1.8 would be good. Cheapest I could find was 95 dollars for a 32 gig, I cant see it droping enough in a couple years to be able to use it. It'd be awesome if it did though.
