Forums - Sales - Can the PS3 slim sell 10 million units by the end of the fiscal year?

oops, last fiscal quarter ended in june didn't it? Still probably leaves around 11.5 million for 7 months.

the problem is what's the break down per region and the number of systems shipped:

europe

usa

japan

asia

etc...

3,4 or 1 or 2 million per region? we do not know the shipping number's

what we do know is:

a) the ps3 is cheaper per region to purchase

b) sony ramped up components for production. so what were the components before the ramp up?

how many systems per month were produced?

Lets be clear:

Sony's fiscal year = April to March

Shipments from April to June (Q1 FY 2010) = 1.1m

Projection for March 2010 FY = 13m

PS3 shipments in the Fiscal Year Ending March 2009 = 10m

All information can be seen here http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/09q1_eleki.pdf

What are you even talking about?  Sony shipped 1.1 million PS3s WORLDWIDE from april-june.  That is a fact.  Following that we can guess they sold a few hundred K in July, and August maybe a few pennies due to the upcoming slim.

so sony could not ramp up production of more units in the next 7 months?

come on?

the very fact that sony dropped production from 1 million per month in 2007 to 500,000 per month shows that Sony can indeed increase production number's.

That can happen anyway, but the very fact that Sony increased the ammount of PS3 components for production of new PS3's how many slim ps3's are in the first run..1 million, 2 million? we do not know that is the wild card.We do not know how many units that sony will be produceing a month but it could indeed be as high as 2 million a month. in 2006 Sony could produce 1 million units a month, with Optiarc that now Sony has NEC manuf. for Blu-Ray optical drives, and toshiba and ibm also produceing cell processors the prime parts that Sony need for the PS3 could be ramped up from those other companies. Since Sony is not creating all the parts for the whole PS3 themselves. there may infact be more production parts for Sony to be able to make more PS3's.

No, it's not plausable that Sony will come close to their sales projections this year ...

In its best year to date the PS3 sold (roughly) 10 Million units, and sales so far this year had them at a pace to sell 7.5 to 8 Million units. To make their projections the PS3 would have to sustain nearly double its current sales level. This seems unlikely because $300 is still expensive for a console in most consumer's eyes (remember 80% of consoles were sold for less than $200 last generation), there are less expensive and more popular alternative systems, and people in general continue to cut back on unnecessary purchases due to the shape of the economy.

the problem is what is the demand for the ps3 at $299.00?

do alot of people want the PS3 but thought $399.00 was too much?

but those same consumer's may see the $299.00 for the PS3 the tipping point.

you point out sustain nearly double it's current sales level, but are you taking into account the markets that sony may be shipping ps3's into .

example in parts of the world the ps3 just was released in late 2008. expanding into new markets or sending more units into those markets that we do not have data on.

the very fact that Sony has been putting more investment as an example:

Blu-Ray into china..one of the best Blu-Ray player's on the market is indeed the PS3 and with a lower price the demand may be higher than it was before.

same with Japan..will the demand for the PS3 be in much higher demand than it has before and by how much.

that's alot of wild card's that we do not have the answer too just a Guess at this point.
