I hate these kind of comparisons because in fact most of nokia's "smartphones" aren't smartphones at all in the sense they are bought to be used as dumbphones. The big majority of people don't buy them because "oh look it has it's own OS and can run third party apps", they just buy them because they are expensive and fashionable Nokia cellphones (the only exception to this it's the infamous 8800).

I've owned Nokia smartphones for years and from a third party application point of view, they were a trainwreck - which is understandable since very few people bought apps or did any customizing beyond changing the cover. Not to mention s60 can't really be a proper smartphone OS since it's main design concern has always been to appeal to the dumbphone crowd. This shortcoming has even transitioned into s60 v5 which is their touchscreen enabled OS (now that's another joke there, since for years Nokia has arrogantly and adamantly stated that customers hate touchscreens).

Anyways you don't even have to take my word for proof - Nokia's transitioning their smartphone line to Maemo (which is a fancy name for their linux implementation lined by propietary closed-source drivers for cellphone hardware) and leaving s60 for the phones targeted to the dumbphone crowd.

The biggest thing is the insane cost of the market. A top-of-the-line iPhone app is even a fraction of a downloadable game, yet the market is LARGER. Crazy. $50,000 would buy you a very nice game that has the potential of making >$500,000 in a matter of a year (provided the game was of a high quality).
