Forums - Sales - Can PS3 take the Japanese holiday season?

I think FF XIII will be coming out too late to make a difference like it would if it'd release sooner. GT5 I'm still guessing next year like I've always have but we'll see. The Slim should make a difference too but I think SW is more important.

Basically it's ToV (should make a decent boost), and FF XIII (big boost) with a possibility of GT5 (big boost but not big like FF XIII) vs. NSMB Wii, FFCC: TCB, Samurai Warriors 3, and probably Tales of Graces (I'm missing some games but I'm only listing the ones with a good force enough force behind them) with WSR + MH3 still selling in the holidays.

It'll be closer than ever but I think the Wii will edge it out.

You're missing Wii Fit Plus, soriku, which is huge.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

oh, i was under the impression FF13 was coming out in december.

It is, or at least it's planned to.

FF7 and FF10 sold because of their cinematic quality. There were no (or few) games before FF7 that could do these kind of cinematic as well as overall graphics. The same is true of 10. The PS3 overshot what consumers could absorb in graphics. FF13 can not save the PS3 consumers will not what a cinematic adventure. Graphics are good enough now, so a game that's selling point is graphics, musical and cinematic quality can not succeed. New Super Mario Bros Wii will, without a doubt, beat out FF13 sales. None of the FF games have out sold the 2D Marios, and NSMB on the DS sold 19 million. The Wii will steal the holiday season again. We are really at the end of the HD twins life.

Not the slim by itself...a CHANCE if FFXIII and GT5 both release this year in Japan.  But would still be tough.

I think NSMB Wii will do similar numbers to Mario Kart Wii.

Similarly multiplayer centric, NSMB Wii is like Mario Kart Wii ... the perfect bridge game for casuals and core players to play together.

I don't think either NSMB Wii or FF13 will top 3 million though. The console business in Japan just isn't big enough anymore.

I'll be very impressed if FF13 tops 2 million in Japan. Don't see it selling 3 million on a user base around 4 millions.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

I ain't saying FFXIII will sell more units of software than NSMB but it for sure will move more hardware....

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

I wouldn't hold my breath for this year.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

time will tell, but i'm afraid nothing can stop the Wiiiiiiiii

PS3 have a big chance so I will not dismiss the possibility of the PS3 taking the holiday season.
FF XIII is also big in Japan and a lot of people is waiting for this game.

Some folks are letting the whole slim and price cut give them dellusions of grandeur.

You do realize the PS3 actually sold more then the Wii in Japan for the first 4 and a half months of this yr right?   Without a price cut that is. There is no delusions here, only opinions that are plausable.

It's not a matter of how well the PS3 performed/offered, its a lack of what the Wii library was. The Wii had little to entice the Japanese market until June, so the sales slumped. The PS3 had some titles to offer, but it didn't make their sales amazing or anything. With the exception of FF13, there's little fire for the Japanese market in terms of sales recovery.

@OP - I can't see PS3 outselling Wii this holiday season in Japan or elsewhere for that matter. They have too much of a negative typecast to shake off, and its glued on pretty good.
