      The only problem with that is didn't they decide to raise the price of the 360 in the UK this week?  If so, I don't know how suddenly saying, "Yeah, we decided to raise the price of the arcade units for a couple of days, but Sony decided to bring out PS3 for $299, so we saw that we had to drastically cut the price in order to keep up." can be anything but bad for pr.

As others have stated, they will do nothing drastic. They have long term plans and will likely stick to them. They will find, just like it was for the PS3 last year, their sales margin dropping compared to the PS3 but it will still be competitive. As the Wii vs. 360 Arcade battle has proved, its not just about the price.

Fall next year will be 360 Slim with whatever the final name for Project Natal is. Its going to be practically a relaunch of the console. That's the time frame circled on their calendar, just like this fall was for Sony and last fall for MS.

Btw, $299 is great, but I'm still poor. Too poor for that even. Economy is just bad still. Anybody with me?

Xbox is doomed to third place now.

But for damage control MS should drop the X360 120GB to $249 asap, and the X360 Arcade to $179 in North America.

The European prices should quickly be dropped to €199 for the X360 120GB, and Arcade to €149, or it's sales will drop like a sack of potatoes in countries like France, Italy, Germany and Holland.

You pose some interesting questions starcraft.
There isn't much to do except lower the price by, say, 50 dollars or so on the top models and perhaps release some sexy bundles!
They could also start selling Elite's or Pro's with a prepaid XBL Gold subscription for a given time, a year or two, just to sweeten the deal and make a slight carrot out of their awesome online.
I'm really glad this is happening now, my TV will be in place in exactly one week and it seems I'll be able to buy both a PS3 and a 360 Elite for 2500NOK now...

Question: How is the PS3 in the 360's price range when it's still 100 dollars more than the arcade?

When Sony loyals argue about price for the last year, they always used the $199 Arcade as why the PS3 isn't selling out. Now that the PS3 knocked off $100, why are people are comparing it to the $299 Elite instead of the $199 Arcade?

Being in 2nd feels so much better than being in 3rd

arcarde + HDD 120gb and a year of live more expensive than ps3. and elite.
