As of September 1, Microsoft will be offering an Elite console (which is becoming the pro really) with an HDD exactly the same size as it's main competitor, virtually identical processing power, but missing a Blu-Ray drive.

As of that moment, Microsoft's price point is quite likely to become untenable.  Whilst it does have a stronger games library (and probably a stronger line-up coming up as well), the Playstation retains a formidable brand-recognition advantage.

So people, where will Microsoft go from here?

That's very much your opinion.

OT: Microsoft will still be able to rely on their strong game line up and momentum (i.e. people will buy one as thier friends have one) to carry sales for some time but they are never going to be able to match the upcoming PS3 sales with the current 360 price. IMO of course.

Whilst future line-up is very much my own opinion, existing library strength is very much the opinion of the broader gaming press and the reviews it produces.

I think Microsoft's best idea yet even better than sending out all of their consoles with the super cool rrod feature was deciding to raise the price of the Arcade model in the UK this week.

I think it is pretty obvious. X360 still sells more in USA but PS3 sells more in Europe and Japan for rest of the year.

well i certainly expect Sony is gonna waaaaaay outsell the 360 this year in Europe and Japan thats for sure. 360 will still stay dominant in NA but will that be enough to make up for losing in the other two main territores?

I think MS won't counteract with anything all that big to be honest. They'll focus on releasing a good catalog of games and the launch of Natal next fall.

Yeah, the sales of the Xbox 360 are just going to come to a halt because of a PS3 price cut.

The 360 and PS3 are cannibalizing each other's markets because they have similar selling points. Success for one means failure for the other.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Microsoft should ride it out through September and most of October. The slim at $299 WILL sell a tonne of consoles in it's first month regardless.

By doing this, Microsoft collects profit on machines sold alongside Halo 3: ODST before a small price cut in late October/Early November carries them through the holidays.

As far as Microsoft's games go...well, Alan Wake might be finished but now it needs so much polish that it can't be released till Spring 2010.

Time for free XBOX Live? It would be a huge cut in revenue obviously, but it would be one less thing that the PS3 would offer for free.
