SciFiBoy - I had very similiar experience as you. There is a record label called Deep Elm Records and they have a CD compilation that is titled Emo Diaries. Now... I've been listening to this since like '97 since the first one came out. There are 11 so far. Anyway, so this is the music I listened to and I went out and bought CD's from the bands on these CD's and I started saying a listened to EMO... well since I think it was '01 I saw this magazine that said "What is Emo?" with saves the day on the cover... now, I have listened to saves the day since their first cd and I always classified them as Pop Punk with the likes of Blink 182. But like it start progressivly getting worse. After '01 whenever I would say Emo people would think of people screaming and crying in a mic and wearing eyeliner and girl pants. This is why I started just naming bands. And when I do if they go "Oh so you listen to bla blah blah" and put in a genre I'll just agree with them.

Does this look like people wearing eye liner and girl clothes? No, but the one on the left was on Emo Diaries in '99
