Forums - Nintendo - Over 100 WiiWare titles in the works?

Possibly:

http://wii.ign.com/articles/826/826171p1.html

If you've been keeping up with our news updates since yesterday, you might have noticed a sudden burst in games being designed for Nintendo's Wii Ware download service. Following Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's detailing of the service at a press conference held in Japan yesterday, Nintendo and its 3rd parties have been flooding the channels with announcements for new downloadable titles.

It turns out that there are indeed quite a few Wii Ware games in development. According to the Kyoto Shimbun, Iwata told the gathered press at the event, "We've already received proposals for over 100 titles from software development companies. We've made a platform for developing software at low cost, and would like to offer a new business chance based around a battle of ideas."

Currently, the following Wii Ware games have been announced: Pokemon Ranch Channel, Dr. Mario, Maruboushikaku, Minna de Puzzloop, Okiraku Ping Pong Wii, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Star Soldier R, Mojipittan Wii, Bomberman, and Joy Sound. New titles seem to be added every time we open our browsers, so keep checking back here at IGN Wii for the latest.

Good things for the Wii. I'm happy to know I'm getting one in the coming days.

For developers I can totally see the appeal ...

If you're looking to generate interesting IPs for the future, and develop the creative leaders of the future, you can take 4 to 8 people and give them the budget to create a game over 6 months ($200,000 to $400,000) and release it to Wiiware in the hopes of breaking even. If the game is successful you can green-light a sequel which will have a slightly larger team (6 to 12 people) and a slightly longer timeline (9 months) and release it to Wiiware in the hopes of breaking even.

After 4 or 5 iterations you're likely going to have a very valueable IP and a moderate to high quality development team; a Company like EA can probably afford to start with 10 teams and (over time) reduce that to 3 or 4 higher quality teams.

I think the important thing to note here is that Nintendo has received over 100 proposals for WiiWare games. That does not mean they accepted all of them.

@HappySqurriel (what the hell is a squrrriel?)
I personally would rather see this be a revitalized version of the old internet shareware community, with a central distribution method and some quality control. This could be an amazing place for new ideas and new developers to break into the industry, and a way to sidestep the megalithic nature of developing high-budget games through big-name publishers.

^I know. That's why I anwsered: Possibly.

Nice, the more downloadable cheap games the better.

Ha, so you did, so you did.  I missed that on a once-over.

I think it's very important that games like Bomberman and Dr. Mario are Wii Ware instead of Virtual Console. That can only mean they're ONLINE.

I'm *seriously* considering restarting my company (Nocturnal) based around a business model purely for WiiWare. Its such a good opportunity - done the numbers, and its really impressive.

It will come down to clever ideas in the end - there will be a lot of games developed for it that will do 10k (or less) sales - which comes to around $50k in revenue.

From what I gather ERSB costs (and other) are paid by the developers, so there are some other overheads to cover. No idea what (if anything) Ninty is charging for submission fees or publishing fees.

Also - from what I heard, there is *no* approval process - just like "retail" publishing, companies are welcome to do whatever they want. They will however need a ESRB rating (in the US) before it will be released.
