Is Microsoft fearful or is Sony desparate?

Another holiday of Microsoft beating Sony will probably be the demise of the PS3 chances getting to second or top place this generation.

Microsoft can afford to "follow the rythm" right now because they are in a better position at this time then they probably thought they would be this generation (I thought 360 would be in last by now with a loyal following, instead it is second and the only console showing overall year over year growth). Sony, is definately in a worse position then they thought they would be (year over year shrinkage and third place in the generation). Sony is only trying to spur sales because they know that if they don't they are destined to last place.

It is a game of corporate chess and we consumers are the pawns.

Sony is destined to last place, despite the price cut, at least to me. The dropping of the price is likely now affordable. They could have done this already, and not only be losing in the market, but EVEN MORE in the pocket. So, I doubt it's desperation, and likely affordability.

How can you say Sony is destined to last place when they are outpacing X360 YoY by a clear margin?

The gap has only increased by 400,000 or so in 2009 despite PS3 being $399 and X360 even as los was $179 in some places of the world.

I say, MS is simply chanceless. X360 is the one destined to last place, sadly.Video Games, Sales, Charts, News, Reviews, Videos, Forums, Game Cheats - Wii, Xbox, PS3, DS, PSP, PS2, PC, iPhone on VGChartz.com

You need to chat with Squill, he'll explain it to you. Sales are different in the year to the holidays.

I'd love to take a bet with him. I think he believes X360 will outsell PS3 this Holiday season, but he seems so unsure that he didn't even specify it with any numbers in his "the x360 will prevail" thread.

(speaking of Holidays, I hope you do remember that PS3 won over X360 in 2007) There's not enough gift givers and soccer moms to save the X360 by buying cheap Arcades this Holiday season.

my sarcasm meter must really really off cuz I recall the 360 beating the ps3 in sales in 2007:

December 07: http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=778

Nov 07: http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=707

October07: http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=644

And I'm pretty sure PS3 sales weren't that high up to in Europe and Japan to give the ps3 the win....

I'm going to say this right now.

Anyone who wants a PS3 has already bought one.
Anyone who wants a 360 has already bought one.
Anyone who wants a Wii has about six including one for a pillow.

The remaining sales are going to be towards the casual or non gamer market. Sony releasing a "slimmed down" version of its system is not going to do jack when,

...drifts off into Christmas 09!

"Mommy, look at what Sony has. it looks really cool!"

"How much is it Timmy?"

"299! and Look, it has Madden 10 on it!"

::Mommy looks at the 199$ Xbox 360 Arcade, which also has Madden available. Mommy thinks about the food, rent, gas , and expendable items 100 extra dollars could get her::

Sorry Timmy, your getting an Xbox

guess we'll find out soon enough... but i'm willing to go out on a limb and say you dont have a strong knowledge of the market.

I'm not going to click on those links because I dont care what they say but from thanksgiving to christmas ps3 won the '07 period. It turned out 360 was massivley over tracked. Same thing that happened in '08. If it weren't for adjustments 360 would be like 10million+ above ps3. It just turned out the ps3 wasnt doing as bad as everyone thought.

@ bigdom2786

You're citing NPD US + Canada data, I meant PS3 won worldwide sales x-mas '07.

Just looked at the charts.....youre right.... but the 360 won by a very very slim margin ( like 10000). 08 is a different story..But ur right .....it's not as bad as people thought.... still kinda suprised the ps3 won 4 weeks of that holiday...worldwide

I don't think so. Tim_Duncans_Mom bought her Timmy a PS3.

The price drop really wont cost Microsoft that much. When you considering the following....

$399.99 to now $299.99 new model.

But the new model loses the following.

Network Cable
HDMI audio/video
Halo 3 and Fable 2

so yeah the system is $100 bucks cheaper but they are also sliming down what it comes with. Both Halo 3 and Fable 2 are esrb at $39.99
