COD4MW

14M- exclusive to HD consoles

CODWAW

11M- multiplat

I read a thread earlier today that had the numbers for WAW. I was surprised to say the least. Shouldn't WAW have had huge poularity and hype because of MW? Was it released to soon after MW? Will CODMW2 have the same fate? Or is it because nobody wants to buy a game that is also on the wii? XD

I don't know. People are sick of WWII, maybe?

It's because MW is much better that W@W. It has nothing to do with it being available on the Wii.

some CoD fans saw COD:WAW as a step back after modern warfare, because of WW2 setting, and Infinity Ward were not the devs, that probably had an effect on sales

Wii/Mario Kart Wii Code:2793-0686-5434

I get this, but the majority of gamers are not hardcore..
they don't know that there was a different dev, it's the same title after all.

Still, 11M people bought it and a lot of them seem to like it.

What will happen when MW2 comes out and people don't like THAT change of pace?

There is no doubt that MW2 will sell a lot, but are they shooting themselves in the foot by:
1) releasing MW on wii the same day (which might pull multiple platform owners off)
2) releasing so soon after WAW
3) releasing so soon after MW

I don't like CoD games...

Modern Warfare has better word of mouth. That's where the extra sales come from, along with the extra 12 months to sell. Look at Xbox Live activity. COD4 is being played online more than World at War is now.

I think COD players are getting more sophisticated in terms of their favorite franchise. They played COD2 and COD3, COD2 is brilliant COD3 is less so. Then COD4 comes out and blows them away, so IW has 2 recent great games, Treyarch has one above average game. Treyarch looks worse by comparison, and everyone is burnt out on WW2. So it gets less sales. But I think any developer should be pretty friggin happy with 11 million.

The extra year for sales and better word-of-mouth would accomodate this. When we're talking about numbers like this, you can't really say it's because of owners' discriminating tastes.
