During the life of this generation of home consoles (Wii, PS3, 360) it seems that Mini Game Compilations and First Person Shooters are the two most popular genres.  I wanted to find out which has been the most successful genre so far this gen.

As you can see when comparing the top 5 of each genre Mini games has a little over a 4 million lead, when you expand it to the top 10 the mini games lead shrinks to less than 2, but still maintains the lead.  With big games in each genre recently released (Wii Sports Resort) or set to release soon (Modern Warfare 2, Halo ODST, Mario & Sonic Winter games) it will be interesting to see if this changes anytime soon.

Here are the top 10 sales for the music genre, one of the other very popular genres this gen, and the sales of the dominant genre in the 8 and 16 bit era, platformers.

- Also if I've left a game out that should have made the top 10 list of either genre let me know. I left out the bundled sales of Wii Sports on purpose to keep it interesting, and consider Wii Fit an exercise game instead of a mini game compilation.

I don't think its fair comparing two completely different genres.

I think it's perfectly fair and would like you to add other genres for reference and maybe even a portable list as well.

Awesome information. It's any easy way to see what genres consumers are responding to.

I'm not sure why it wouldn't be fair to compare the two genres in top 10 sales. Sometimes I agree it doesn't make since to compare. For example it wouldn't make since to compare the first week sales of a HD platform FPS to the first week sales of mini game collection on Wii, because they have different sales patterns. But just comparing current top 10 total sales seems fair to me, even more so because of how close the two genre's totals ended up being.

Take out the bundle controller from wii play and lose 20 million in sales.

I debated whether or not Wii Play should be included, but decided because it is not a forced bundle it should be included. I excluded Wii Sports sales in the West because of it being a forced bundle. Also on the FPS side Resistance, and Halo 3 now have both been part of optional bundles, obviously the sales were not as impacted as Wii Play's have been but still had some influence on those games.
