It doesn't play like a shooter though. It's not like playing Gears or Halo or something. It's still RPG combat.

It depends what class you are. As just a soldier, it plays as a shooter, and the cover system isn't good enough to make it great from a gameplay perspective. However, as a biotic, you can do the equivalent of force push, lift and more which make for much more interesting gameplay

It plays somewhat like Fallout 3 (sans the vats system) except in third person view.

You must get mass effect though, its one of the best games of all time, story is amazing, graphics are very good (has pop-in though), and it has the perfect balance of Shooter/RPG/Looting elements in it.  And its cheap!!!!

The beauty of Mass Effect is that it plays like whatever you want it to play like.

If you like shooters be a soldier class and set your ally AI to actively use all their skills.

If you'd rather play it as more of an RPG then be something besides a soldier, and set your ally AI not to use their skills automatically.
