The beauty of Mass Effect is that it plays like whatever you want it to play like.
If you like shooters be a soldier class and set your ally AI to actively use all their skills.
If you'd rather play it as more of an RPG then be something besides a soldier, and set your ally AI not to use their skills automatically.
