40gb purchased Dec 2007. No problems so far.
Tifa got MOVES!

I had a 40GB, bought it June 5th 2008.
I upgraded the hard drive to 160GB a month ago.
Never died, no problems at all.
I had a 60gb european launch model PS3 which died 4 weeks ago and after paying Sony 160 euros, they replaced it with a refurbished 80gb model. So now I have an 80gb model

Jan 2007, 60GB SKU; heavy use including a 6 month 24/7 Folding session (estimate 5,000+ total run time hours) = bricked Nov 2008.
Nov 2008, 40GB MGS4 LE; no problems.
Jan 2009, 60GB SKU refurb received from SCE; low use, no problems.
Re: 60GB SKU; if the fan regularly kicks into high speed or always runs louder than when it was new, it's running too hot. Either do a thorough cleaning out of the internals with a shop vac or compressed air, or use an external cooler (fan, cooling pad, good room circulation, whatever) to keep those fans spinning at lower speeds.
Mine had small dust balls blow out after a thorough compressed air cleaning following thousands of hours of run time despite being dusted on a regular basis.
