Yeah, lets build a city in kiddy style is pretty hilarious.
Acme should sue them.
You're in the extreme minority. Retro gaming has its kitsch value, but the industry and the hardware doesn't stand still.
That was just an example about devolution of games. There are pretty complex new games too, but mostly only crappy console ports. Another good example(beside anno) is Guild 2.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guild_2
Even its economy system surpass most games with its complexity and thats only one part of game(add politics, family wars, breeding your family, dying etc. and you get whole game. About dying, when your main char dies, you can play as your children, if you have them.).
"The Guild 2 has a very complex economics system, all Characters can lose and earn money through buying and selling. For example: A manufacturer makes an item, the item is bought by another manufacturer who makes another item out of it and sell it to another player who uses it. Also when a Computer Player buys an item he does as if he was a real player, he either stores in his house or uses it, a rogue player can then steal it if it was stored."
(+ prices change real time according to demand, so you cannot just spam some items. You can also buy stuff cheaply when theres lots of it and sell when theres lack of goods etc.)
As much as I hate using Metacritic as a reference, it does reflect what the vast majority of gamers rate highest and games like Half Life 2/Orange Box, Bioshock, Oblivion, etc. are all among the highest regarded games in PC gaming. All on console.
As much as I like reviews, I believe in them(I don't like them, if you didn't get it. :) ). Reviewers today don't have balls to complain about bad things in games. Btw, there was an article about it on this site too(it was about gta IV and reviewing).
Sooner or later there will be less 'hardcore' console games and more casual games(motion controls and developing costs will make it happen). When that happens, you will be bitching about casuality in games and I will be laughing then.
