WOw these are some sexy numbers! And it sold so much only in 2 days, it will easily crack a million, and who knows maybe the game will become such hit as the PSP versions. It will be interesting to see what will be the second week drop. Soo... hardcore games can sell on the Wii?

Nice sales for the Wii as well, hopefully MH and WSR can sustain some nice numbers in Japan.

Previous one so far haven't even doubled it's first week sales.

We will see if MH3 with a paid for online gameplay can mantain legs like PSP version.

1) previous ones had 4 days in first week, MH3 had 2.

2) MH wasn't as popular back then

3) controller bundles appear to have sold out

Munster Hunter wasn't popular 15 weeks ago?

I know what you're getting at but back when MH2 came out the game was far less popular, and didn't have the casual following the series does now on the PSP, it was mostly built on hardcore followers hence being so frontloaded. The question is whether some of those more casual players will see MH3 and jump over or not. That would determine whether the game has legs or not. Obviously it isn't gonna sell nearly as much as the PSP version but some of the success with casuals should carry over.

I don't think the japanese know what your talking about with that casual bs. I think japan is above the use of stereotypes and media branding/manipulation to sell violent games to teenagers, if they like a game they buy even if its got non HD graphics.

The rest of us are Uri Gellars spoons, bent to the whim of MS and Sony executives trying to keep any market share they still have.

that's a bunch of BS. It is very well known that many games sell in Japan due to brand power, this has nothing to do with HD graphics or selling violence to teenagers I don't know where you got that from.

^ Ok so why the difference here? Why don't enough people buy Wii versions of "brand power" games? Tell me why bcoz i dk.

Truth is DS is huge and its not about graphics in graphics, its different here.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

what are you talking about?  This has nothing to do with graphics at all, it's about brand name in Japan.  Yes big brands do sell on wii, hence why DQ, MH, Resident Evil, Taiko no Tatsujin and Tales have sold on Wii.  The problem is that games without brand power haven't always been so lucky.

Glad it sold well, look forward to when it arrives in the states! It may actually pull me back from the neglect I've given my poor wii

read that on neogaf a while ago, they do include bundles. It's not that unusual for famitsu and media create to be off by that much. Leaked MC numbers have wii over 100k though.

So would we rather have MH3 down over 50k or the Wii over 100K?

Wow, those are monster sales! This could easily sell a million wiuthin a month...

I'm more interested in how it will hold up in the west, though.

Something is very wrong with the article below... *sigh*  No matter what, the Wii just can't win!

Wii Surges in Japan

Monster Hunter 3 and black color variation cause sales spike.

August 7, 2009 - After weeks and weeks of Dragon Quest IX-influenced DS dominance, Nintendo's other half took over in Japan this past week, topping both the hardware and software charts out of Media Create. This was, of course, the doing of Monster Hunter 3 and the new black Wii unit.

MH3 sold 520,000 units in its first week, becoming the only third party Wii game to top the half million mark in first week sales in Japan. It's also the third fastest selling Wii game to date in Japan, behind only Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii.

But there's somewhat of a dark side to the story here. You might recall an announcement from Capcom last week about a million in shipments for MH3. Media Create reports today that the game managed to sell just 54.36% of its stock. The Classic Controller Pro and black Wii bundles performed well, selling, respectively, 70% and upwards of 80% of their stock. But the standalone version of the game didn't even reach the 40% mark in sell-through.

We'll have to continue to watch the weekly sales charts for long term sales trends.

Here's the full software chart for the week covering July 27 through August 2. Total sales for older releases are in parentheses.

  • 1. Monster Hunter 3 (Capcom, Wii): 520,000
  • 2. Dragon Quest IX (Square Enix, DS): 180,000 (3,382,000)
  • 3. Friend Collection (Nintendo, DS): 82,000 (510,000)
  • 4. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, Wii): 66,000 (828,000)
  • 5. Puyo Puyo 7 (Sega, DS): 52,000
  • 6. Gears of War 2 (Microsoft, X360): 49,000
  • 7. Pachinko Pachislot Strategy Series Vol.14 CR Evangelion (D3 Publisher, PS2): 42,000
  • 8. Armored Core 3 Portable (From Software, PSP): 41,000
  • 9. Okaeri! Chibi Robo! Happy Rich Daisouji! (Nintendo, DS): 23,000 (58,000)
  • 10. ToHeart2 Portable W Pack (Aqua Plus, PSP): 22,000

Thanks to the black Wii, the Wii saw a huge sales surge to nearly four times its previous week total. Of the 95,000 total Wii units sold, Media Create reports 45,000 were for the standalone black unit and 20,000 were for the Monster Hunter 3 Special Set.

Here's the full hardware chart:

  • Wii: 95,357 (23,995)
  • DSi: 73,710 (80,362)
  • PSP: 33,049 (30,523)
  • DS Lite: 12,027 (12,385)
  • PS3: 8,760 (8,997)
  • PS2: 3,617 (3,305)
  • Xbox 360: 3,552 (3,080)

The Wii's two summer Japanese hits are now out with Wii Sports Resort and Monster Hunter 3. The next major Japanese release for Nintendo is Wii Fit Plus, which hits on October 1. With CEO Satoru Iwata indicating that Nintendo still has no plans for a price drop, we'll have to see if the system can keep its momentum for the next couple of months.

I'm pretty sure Media Create undertracked MH3.

Previous versions of MH, shipment data, Famitsu AND VGChartz data all disagree with Media Create. 520k does seem ridiculously low, I even found VGChartz' 561k a bit on the low side.
