Forums - Gaming - Best FPS controls

Wow I see a lot of correlations here lol

Outspoken HD console fan: Dual Analog >>>>> all

Outspoken Wii fan: Wii Remote >>>>> all

Though yes there are the personal preferences I know but if you sat down and said hey lets all play the same FPS and one player gets M&K the next a Wii remote the third a Dual analog controller and last guy a DS to control the game. How do you really think that will turn out?

The analog+mouse combo would be ideal for best controls ever, then just normal M&KB, then Wii remote, followed closely by DS (I know a lot of people have issues since they get hand cramps and such but I was in the top ranks on Metroid Prime Hunters I know how well the thing can perform FPS wise) then you get to dual analog with 360 being better suited then PS3 just because of the analog layout, then your N64/PSP one analog controls, and lastly SNES with Doom... simply hated it :\

And i was amongst the top ranked players in CoD4 with a PS3 controller.  And i only ever ran into one player better then me in Co-op for R2 again using a standard controller so i know how well that performs in FPS games.

And IMO the PS controller would be best, it has a perfect layout for my hands.  I get hand cramps using a keboard/mouse, and can't using the pointer and/or motion controls for the wii.  And the DS FPS games, well that just seems like a big joke to me as i found it almost impossible.  And the 360 i find hard to use and the stick layout wrong and hurts my left hand.

So each player finds it all different even if they are a fanboy or not, you can't just say one is better then the others and thats it.

I pretty agree with maxwell but I never tried the analog and mouse combo.

Also, PS3 users might have a chance to try Wii like controls even in the 2010 summer when the sony motion controls launches and some already existing FPS get a patch (most likely?) and I'm shure many will like it.

For x360 fans I'm not quite shure if Natal can take the dual analog out of their hands since it is only a camera. But the X360 controller is considered the best dual analog control ever. so...

A nunchuk with a mouse? Is that any good?

weird :x

Absolutely it is. Think about it. The thing people that want mouse and keyboard preach is SO MUCH BETTER than dual analog is their ability to look around faster and with greater precision.

That's what the mouse is about.

However, their actual MOVEMENT is inferior to the left analog concept. The left analog produces vastly superior precision for actual MOVEMENT, so the console players have the advantage there.

This is where Wii gameplay comes in. The Wii offers near-mouse-like precision and speed for looking around, and an analog for moving. But the Wiimote is still considered inferior (albeit A LOT MORE FUN) than a good mouse).

So you put a mouse and an analog together, and you have all the advantages. Actually, I have something even better than that setup there, but that thing's for console gameplay, and what I have is only for PC. It's a Logitech G13 + G5, which combines mouse, keyboard, and analog stick.

Um.... No

Movement is fine on a keyboard and mouse.

To the thread topic,

Mouse and keyboard is my pick.

FACT: You are wrong.

FACT: You cannot get the same precision out of pressing a button that simply triggers YES or NO (GO or STOP) as you can from an analog that can determine between as many different motion speeds as the developers want to program in. ONE speed of motion (two if you have a walk/run button to add to the mix), or AS MANY AS YOU WANT? Which is better?

FACT: I've been playing first-person shooters literally since Wolfenstein 3D first came out, and I'm quite literally familiar with every single type of FPS control that's ever come out. Including the alternatives that improve on the traditional mouse + keyboard. And as a result, I can assure you, there ARE superior methods of control. Mouse + keyboard DOES work acceptably, but mouse + analog works BETTER. I know this from experience.

FACT:

When you are trying to sneak to an enemy with the vastly superior analog stick you are most likely wishing for a walk button.

Yet you neglect where I said "Though yes there are the personal preferences I know but if you sat down and said hey lets all play the same FPS and one player gets M&K the next a Wii remote the third a Dual analog controller and last guy a DS to control the game. How do you really think that will turn out?" I'm speaking only on performance which control set up will give you better control (as long as you can wrap your mind around how to use it) and because of the faster more precise controls you will win the match.

Performace is the only to judge the best FPS controls.  If you judge it by prefence you get a lot of people that will just say what they game on and have never really sat down to try another form of control but who would win using what control set up is quite obvious.

What? No, I'm pretty certain that every single game that allowed analog OR keyboard usage gave me the option of slower, sneakier movement with the analog. Walk button doesn't walk slowly enough in all cases.

The game that has the best controls for a FPS game to me is in Killzone 2.
