I feel like it's the first "cinematic" game (well... I only played VII-XII... and only beat VIII lol. I sucked at gaming when I was younger... and treated all my discs like crap...). I guess after the success of VIII that's the natural step Square would want to take.

VIII hands down, but Vesperia is one of the best non Final Fantasy RPGs ever made.

If this theory would be true, story would be much, much better. And in potencional remake, make better characters, please. While Squall and Rinoa were OK (even if I don´t like this "doom and gloom" type of people), rest was.... for battle only. And please, please, change this retarded leveling system.
For topic: I´ll go with Vesperia, mostly because of thing I already wrote. For what I didn´t wote, I like anime-like style much more, than style of VIII.

this. FFviii is my first and favorite JRPG of all time and although I haven't played ToV, I just can't see it usurping Squall and Co.

Agreed.
Vesperia, I would also say, is easily the best Tales game too.
