Okay, at the moment in the UK, you can get
- 80Gb with 2 games for £279.99 (RRP £299.99 with 1 game)
- 60Gb BC for £215.00 at Play (don't know where this came back from, thought they had all sold out)
- 40Gb for £199.99 at various stores
Anyway, with all the sales of the older versions (40Gb & 60Gb) and at prices lower that this rumoured RRP of £260, then I just can't see it being only a £40 drop in the UK.
They are pretty obviously trying to get rid of all of the old versions, hence the much lower price tags, but what happens when the Slim appears on the market?
Well first and foremost, if the slim appears, people will want that model before going for the old model even if the builds not as nice and missing a USB port or two....so Sony surely have to reduce the costs of the current 80Gb model to make way for the new model, and why bring out a 40Gb model when people are getting used to bigger HD's?
I've said this many times before, I honestly think that Sony will significantly reduce the current model by as much as £100 in the UK, although I doubt it will be this much...but who knows, it's likely to be around £60-£80 cheaper but maybe as much as £100. Then release the new Slim with a bigger hard drive, maybe 120Gb or 160Gb with a few games and extra controller maybe for the current £299.99 price.
Sony will be making money on the new Slim model being at £299.99 and $399.99 in the US and can even afford to put in a few games as well to boot. And the older models should fly off the shelves at £199.99/£219.99/£229.99 in the run up to Xmas and once the stock has run out, which will more than likely be next year sometime, Sony reduce the Slim to the lesser pricepoint and everyone is happy.
In short, reducing the cost to £260 in the UK won't do anything really unless it comes with a game or two and retailers can reduce by a further £20 or so to make it look better.
Look at the pricepoint history in the UK so far!
- Launched at £425 with a 60Gb model only
- Reduced to £350 with 2 games and launch of new 40Gb non BC model at £299
- 60Gb model all but disappears and 40Gb model is replaced by 80Gb at same pricepoint although retailers add games and reduce to around £280
- Sale on old 40Gb models to £199 and very old 60Gb BC models to £215
Something significant is going to happen, I'm sure.
