PS3 Slim to Cost 260 GBP?

Console to arrive in time for Christmas according to reports.

You might have thought you'd heard the last of the PS3 Slim stories – well tough luck, because the torrent of rumours is unlikely to cease until this year's GamesCom.

UK broadsheet The Telegraph is rumouring that the slim-line SKU is to be announced at the Cologne show later this month – and is as bold as to detail some of the console's specifics.

The PS3 Slim, according to the report, is to come in 40 GB and 80 GB flavours, with a price point starting at around 260 GBP (which translates as 440 USD at the current exchange rate – though with the unique exchange system employed by the videogame industry, expect it to come in well below that figure if The Telegraph's musings are true).

That would mean that the new system would undercut the existing PS3 model, which currently carries a 299.99 GBP price tag.

The Telegraph cites the ramping up of production of PlayStation components in the Far East as potential evidence for the new console. If you're sick of all the PS3 Slim rumours, you'd be well advised to stick your fingers in your ears and keep them there for the next two weeks.

Sorry i think i saw an official PS3 slim thread but couldnt find it again.

If im not reading it wrong, it doesnt seem the PS3 Slim will be any cheaper, and with a 40gb & 80gb HDD? Kinda weak.  "260 GBP (which translates as 440 USD..." Good for UK but bad for NA? Pulling a PSP Go anyone? ...but thats if Sony does sell the slim at a higher price but who knows til official details are finalized.

40gb and 80gb???? And there is a thread about 80gb getting discontinued in Japan or sumthing? wtf??

That would be 40 pounds cheaper.

It would certainly shift some consoles, but it wouldn't be an explosion. And if Microsoft responded with a price cut, they'd maintain their lead and both Sony and Microsoft would lose any short-term sight of profitability until an economic recovery.

Doesnt sound right, PS3 slim leaked photos showed a 120 GB. They currently have a 80GB and a 160GB why would they go back to 40GB and 80GB?

Oh soothsayer, what do you have in store for me in the future, since you can predict it so clearly?

A 40 Pound Price cut would probably be a ~50 Euro/$50 price cut if I had to guess.

£260 doesn't mean $440 because hardware in UK is always comparitively more expensive than USA

What's your problem? Seems fairly accurate to me.

I saw another rumour saying an £80 cut...

WAIT FOR GAMESCOM

And a £40 cut is too little, but there is no way M$ is cutting prices in the UK, Nintendo have actually had to raise their trade prices because of the weakening pound.

Oh hey you're back

Well, based on past European trends this generation, I'd say my prediction is quite likely to be accurate.

When Microsoft made a small cut there was minimal medium term impact.  On the other hand, their big cut worked wonders.

If this report is accurate, Sony will be making a small cut, which will have a reasonable effect (because there is strong PS brand recognition in Europe) but one still limited by the small nature of the cut.  If Microsoft counteracted that cut, it's reasonable to assume that any ground-making effects of Sony's cut would be negated.
